You're quite correct that the optician couldn't touch it. We had to send any job to Hoya if it involved removing or inserting the lenses.
In Europe, there is certainly a big demand for rimless still, despite them not really being in fashion currently.
The yardstick for me would be Flair. I think they make the best rimless frames in the world. Lindberg is good too, but silhouette and other plug mounted rimless frames are terrible in my opinion.
Your concept sounds interesting.
