    Getting chippy

I have a person who has a nice flint-flake-like chip on the front surface near the periphery of his gray glass FT28s.

IIRC, when heat tempering (in days of yore) that would "release" all the "surface tension" and render the lens dangerous.

I know that we chem temper glass theses days. (Right?)

Is there still a safety issue with chipped glass?

Yes. If possible, hand grind the chip out and re-temper. (re-temper both or there will be a color difference for quite a while).

This! First, I would check the tempering under a polariscope for the maltese cross. Maltese cross=heat temper. I would not retemper if it was heat treated-greater chance of breaking. No cross=chem. If you have a chem tempering unit, then hand bevel away and re-temper. Or have your lab do so.

    My 2 pennies.
I bend light. That is what I do.
