    Swimming pools and AR

A patient came in to get new glasses. Her old lenses were very clouded. She mentioned that she swims in her pool everyday with her glasses on (Rx +4.00 OU). I recommended she have some prescription swim goggles made, but I was wondering have any of you seen lenses become clouded from repeated exposure to pool chemicals? Also, is there any recommended material and coating combination that can stand up to this kind of environment?

Trivex also does better with chemicals.

But the trivex hard coat is the same chemical CR39 HC , so chlorine can attack HC... but I don't think concentrations, in a pool, are high enough

I have. Especially hot tubs. 1.67 AR's are the most susceptible in my experience.

Hilco makes inexpensive spherical equivalents swim googles that I'd recommend she get.

Part of the problem is that a number of pools are now using less chlorine with alternative salts, some are bromine or iodine salts. I have no idea how well a coating would stand up to reactants like that.

Anyone know the salt solution in a pool as chlorine cutback? I know these pools are very popular in the south and I have not heard of dried salt (it's now a rock!) causing issues- but I see the potential if you are not rinsing wet lenses with water after the pool salt dries on a lens.
