I was lucky enough to have a sample delivered to the office in my Rx before they became available for purchase, so I've tried it for the full 2-week life span of the lens.

I have to say, while it's a novel concept and has some definite niche markets, I don't think it's going to be as wildly successful as the sales rep thought it would. First of all, I have rather dark brown eyes, so after the lenses are fully activated, my iris is almost black in appearance. Slightly off-putting to viewers. I also did not think that the Transitions really helped all that much. I may be an oddball, but I'm quite sensitive to light and glare, especially in the bright sun, and I did not find any situation where I would not want to wear my polarized sunglasses. Aside from that, the lens felt and performed exactly the same as a normal AV Oasys 2-week lens.

That being said, people who are active outdoors (cyclists, kayakers, baseball players, etc) will likely find a LOT of use for this lens. In some situations, not having to think about sunglasses would be of great benefits to those types of people. I'm sure there are also plenty of people who don't have the same issues with bright light and glare that I do, and they would likely find the lenses useful for quick in-and-out errands without the hassle of sunglasses.

However, it bears mentioning as providers of medical eye care, that the lenses ARE NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR SUNGLASSES. The sclera and lids remain exposed to harmful UV light, even with the lenses in. I really hope that J&J does their homework before releasing any marketing material on these lenses to the general public, because it's going to be REALLY easy for the layperson watching TV to incorrectly think that the lenses are a quick and easy replacement for sunwear.

My experience was similar. I too have dark eyes and am photophobic. These did not get dark enough for me to be visually comfortable in the sun, I wanted to put on my sunglasses. When I removed my lens it had a dark horizontal stripe across the lens because my lids covered 2/3 of the lens from squinting. The lenses could potentially do harm if consumers think these replace sunglasses.
    Time will tell!

We had a lunch-and-learn with our Vistakon rep on Friday to talk about this lens. It sure is a niche product, but I can't figure out exactly what the niche is. Maybe if it was a daily lens? I was surprised at how reasonable the MSRP for a 6-pack was.

These kind of remind me of when they came out with the Nike contacts. I don't remember them doing well.

I think the cosmetic appearance when the lenses are activated will be a deal breaker for most.
