    Help with measurements

Hi, I am a new optician and have a question. I was using the pupilometer to take a persons PD and they were apparently seeing two dots, so what I did was i moved the knob on the pupilometer from the infinite sign to 100, when I did that he said he saw it better and only saw one dot. So what I want to know, is that, is this is correct or should I have just left it on the infinity section and gotten him to focus on one of the dots? Thank you for any information you are able to provide.

Those numbers are the setting focal length in centimeters.

Beyond 10 feet leave it at infinity- 40 for 14 inches the other numbers for in between.

My pupilometer is a single green lighted circle. Not sure why the patient got 2 "dots".

When I said dots I meant green circle. But the problem is when he is focusing on the green circle he said that he is seeing 2 of them and that he doesn't know which one to focus on. But when I moved the knob to 100 he saw it more crisp and he saw 1 circle instead of 2. So what I'm mainly confused about is if I leave it at infinity will the measurements be right?

It sounds like the patient is diplopic. Does the patient have prism prescribed? Use the occluder switch on the top of your pupilometer and measure each eye, one at a time.

He doesn't have prism prescribed. But I will try to retake the measurements one at a time. Thank you for the advice.

And confirm by taking a near PD using pupilometer set at 40 cm, and then add 3-4 mm for distance PD.

do you have an occluder in your pupilometer? it's a flipper that covers one eye at a time. If the patient still see's 2 images when doing that then it's time to go back to the doctor immediately.
