Enjoyed this one. I'm going to a conference in Venice soon where they are hosting a roundtable discussion about the future of the industry. I think we all need to become very fast at adapting to change.

It is such a two-edged sword of possibility.

On one swing refraction technology could produce an entire new dawn of the independent optician.
Getting your new lens order (formerly known as a prescription) would be a secondary, afterthought part of the eyeglass buying experience.
Nothing more than getting your feet measured for a new pair of shoes.
"Oh, and before you go I just need you to sit here for a minute."
The glasses buying experience becomes the reason people come to see the optician.
That COMBINED WITH their unique skill set and knowledge base that means the glasses they choose will actually work well for them.

On one swing technology could render the entire skill set of optician obsolete.
Push the future a little bit and you can (easily) imagine a device capable of capturing e-v-e-r-y s-i-n-g-l-e thing needed for a (near perfect) pair of glasses.
Plug that data into designyourglasses.com design software and it helps you choose frame material, lens material, coatings, colors and then your desktop 3-D printer spits a pair out 15 minutes later.
    Fantasy - I don't think so.
