VisionCheck awarded CES 2019 Innovations Honoree

EyeQue®, the leader in award-winning, affordable at-home vision health devices, today announced the EyeQue VisionCheck™ personal vision tracker. VisionCheck is the world’s first automated optical device built for consumers to measure and track their refractive error and order eyeglasses with the results. Based on MIT technology, VisionCheck combines a cloud-based platform, a smartphone application, and a motorized optical scope to form a low-cost, easy to use mobile solution for people to gather corrective vision measurements whenever and wherever they choose. The scope attaches to the consumer’s own smartphone screen and uses Bluetooth to send data to the phone. Further, EyeQue today announced that VisionCheck has been named a CES® 2019 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Technology for a Better World category.

......................................................now that seems to be the first reality news in the optical retail world of 2019.

The product does call it refraction or eye test, they call it "VisionCheck" which is a new word in the optical vocabulary.

How far will this go when the new G5 phones are coming, out this or next year ?

Who will buy up the rights and patents to try and dominate the markets and for how much ?

...........will be interesting to see the progress in a little while.

The VisionCheck includes a patent-pending pupillary distance (PD) measurement tool, called the PDCheck, that accurately captures your PD in a matter of seconds.

    PD Check:
VisionCheck includes another cool test called PDCheck™. Accurate measurement of pupillary distance, PD, is necessary to order prescription eyeglasses. If the measured PD is wrong, you will find the glasses uncomfortable and it will make you feel dizzy. Our patented PDCheck technology uses the smartphone camera to take a “selfie” and extracts the PD to an accuracy of +/- 1 mm.

congratulations .............................................. you are the first optician to announce that you are going to try it, and I hope that you will report some of the findings right here on OptiBoard for all to see..

I just checked it on Googleunder " automated vision check" and there it is, sold by Indiegogo.comThis is probably the major news in the optical retail trade, at the beginning of this year. This is what will make an optometrist develop cold sweat, if it works as they advertise it.

Online Optical's will love it and it will be be its best promotion. If it actually works as they say, it will make lots of money for the developers and the ones that financed it.

I checked on Indiegogo.com and found them on Wikipedia, .............................................very interesting

I also found the EyeQue website that sells the instrument, at:

Last night there was one link listed on Google on the subject, today there are at least 6 of them.

Blue Jumper measure your own eyeglass prescription at home ......................................

In the era of Warby Parker, measure your own eyeglass prescription at home
    Optometrist,

    BY LYNN LA

With the popularity of direct-to-consumer retailers like Warby Parker, Zenni Optical and EyeBuyDirect, people are taking the process of buying prescription glasses into their own hands by skipping brick-and-mortar retailers and insurance policies.

But EyeQue VisionCheck, which debuted here at CES 2019 on Sunday, is hoping to do one better by skipping the optometrist altogether. Working with a mobile app, the Bluetooth-powered portable device can conduct vision tests at home, and can measure nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

After testing, the device spits out what it calls your personal "EyeGlass Numbers." The numbers work similar to an eyeglass prescription, but do not require a doctor's sign-off. You can then take your number to specific retailers that will honor EyeGlass numbers like Zenni Optical and EyeBuyDirect, and buy prescription glasses completely on your own -- no appointment or waiting room required.

During my brief time with it, I tried getting an accurate reading of my vision. To do this, I had to align a red and green line that I viewed through the scope until they were touching. Using the buttons on top of the VisionCheck, I pushed the lines either closer or farther apart. The number of times I clicked these buttons determined my EyeGlass numbers.
Because the entire process takes up to 20 minutes, I couldn't finish the test and didn't get an accurate reading. Plus, I found the initial process to be a bit complicated. I could see how this device might be convenient for someone who needs to constantly check their changing prescription, but as a casual eyeglass wearer, a once-in-a-year trip to the doctor suffices for me.

EyeQue VisionCheck is the newer iteration of last year's EyeQue, which is currently available online at Amazon and BestBuy for $30. Unlike its predecessor, VisionCheck has Bluetooth, and it can automatically measure the distance between internal optical lenses without the need to manual rotate the eye cups.

The Indiegogo campaign for VisionCheck has already exceeded its goal and the company plans to ship out the product in March or sooner.

..........................something like this "EyeQue" had to come at some point of time in the future, but I never thought it would be that close. But it is now a fact and anybody with a cell phone can now get a visual Rx done in 15 minutes for the original cost of
    $ 30.00.

The chances of it becoming a huge success are tremendous if it holds and keeps it promises, and works close to perfect.

There will probably be competitive products along the same lines in the very near future

Opticians will loose more computer savvy customers, and optometrists will loose eye exams for new and renewal of Rx prescriptions, because this is a ticket to purchase eyeglasses from heavy discounters or online optical's.

How is the conventional optical retail market going to respond ?

Blue Jumper VisionCheck might give you the option to ditch your visit to your optician……..

    Here is their advertising:

VisionCheck might give you the option to ditch your visit to your optician……..

The optical scope contains three optical lenses which are automatically rotated by a precision motor so that the lenses can capture each eye’s meridian — the line running across your visual field from top to bottom or left to right. There is also a rechargeable battery inside the scope, a Bluetooth control interface, and a touch mechanism. The scope pairs with the smartphone app which will measure pupillary distance — the distance between your pupils. This information collected by the scope can then be used to measure eye features like focus and astigmatism that cause vision limitations, and can give you a prescription-like measure of what eyeglasses you need to correct your vision. This is sure to be useful for the growing number of people who order glasses online instead of visiting an optometrist. It also has the potential to bring vital eye testing to people in remote areas who may not have access to a traditional eye doctor.

“We’re committed to bringing affordable, accurate, easy-to-use vision health trackers to market such that anyone, anywhere can take an active role in their own vision care,” said Dr. John Serri, co-founder and chief operating officer of EyeQue in a statement. “VisionCheck is the manifestation of remarkable optical ingenuity and heeded customer input. Leveraging Bluetooth technology, improved optics, a precision motor for automatic lens rotation to measure astigmatism, and an enhanced user-testing interface the product is now even more accessible and easier to use than its predecessor while remaining highly affordable.”
