    Computer Glasses

Looking for advice/example on prescription for computer glasses. Single vision prescription for using computer screen about 24 inches away.

    Regular prescription is:

    Sphere Cyl Axis NearAdd
    OD -5.00 -1.25 180 +1.25
    OS -4.25 -2.25 154 +1.25

The Near Add is for bifocal, reading. So, for single vision reading glasses, I guess the Sphere would be OD -3.75, OS -3.00? But I assume reading is for more like 12 inches away? So for computer glasses, would it be closer to a +0.75? Like OD -4.25, OS -3.50?

While it may be basic, if you are new to the field, welcome. First you need to know the distance your client is sitting from their computer. Have them measure that distance and from that you can calculate the power needed. Most likely, the reading distance is refracted for 40cm or 16 inches.

There should be enough reserve accommodation to cover the 61cm/24" work distance, if the +1.25 add is for 40cm/16". In other words, concentrate on the distance and near- the intermediate will take care of itself.

    Hope this helps,

I love the smell of a do-it-yourselfer at Christmastime.
