    Artsy stuff

How about using colored nylon for semi-rimless frames? Anyone doing that?

How about doing a painted groove on rimless frames? Anyone doing that?

How about fashion tints (the cafe tints of yore)? Anyone doing that?

It seems like a colorful world, right now.

Once in a blue moon I will do it. I don't have a display out or anything, maybe I should. Tinting is always fun.

All the above along with custom shapes, facets and stone inlays too. I haven't stopped doing these since the late '70's. Yea, I'm old....

Take your 25 lb monofilament, cut off sections and drop them in the dye pot. Make whatever colors you want.

Back in the day when crown glass was the lens material of choice we frequently sent rimless eyewear out to this local craftsman, Pepi Herrmann, for custom engraving and etching. Some of his work was stunning.

Here is his web site: http://www.handcut.com/ It's nice to see that he is still around but I dont think that he would be interested in working with plastics nor do I think that you could afford it.

If it is a Nylon thread, dye will not penetrate into the material and flake off faster than you can think.

Nylon monofilament fishing line ABSORBS water. So yes dye will penetrate it, and it does not flake off. I have done it many times myself, and it has never flaked off.

    Blue Jumper

    DID YOU KNOW?

Monofilament fishing lines absorb water, which means they behave differently beneath the surface than when you’re testing them in the tackle shop.
The degree varies. Some are sponges, sopping up 8 percent or more of their weight in water. Premium blends absorb less, but still soak up some.
In general, water absorption makes mono "looser," or more relaxed than when the line is dry. It stretches more, handles better and casts farther. On the flip side, abrasion resistance tends to suffer, along with both tensile and shock strength.

I just learned something new, and stand corrected.

I do a lot of the painted grooves and some fashion tinting. Too often I seem to be doing the painting of three or four pairs at 3:00-5:00 AM before I go to bed -- not a healthy schedule but the work must get done!

We've also found that a good quality nail polish will stay forever in a poly or plastic groove. The colors are endless and it's much cheaper than "groove" paint.

Once I grabbed glow in the dark fishing line and didn't realize it until a patient came back and told me his glasses glowed in the dark.
What is reality but a concept unique to each of us? Can anything be classed as real when our perceptions differ greatly on so many things? Just because we see something a particular way does not make it so.

    That sounds like fun!
Have I told you today how much I hate poly?
