Big Smile VSP's New Technical Addon Fee/Copay?

A little surprise from VSP as of 7/1.

Any VSP gurus out there have a simple explanation for how it works, i.e. for which lens situations, etc.

I figured asking the good folks on this board would be just as quick as trying to get thru to VSP (a real person!) by phone.

    Thanks for any wisdom shared.

    VSP Response

We first learned of this Technical Add on when we received our last EOB. There was a $10 Technical Add On copay that was supposed to be charged the patient and a chargeback of (-$8) was charged to our office. It was for Eyezen 1, 2 and 3. Apparently this was communicated to VSP providers via VSP's At-A-Glance email that was sent to offices on 06/22/2018 (which we didn't get). Effective on 07/01/2018. I'm still trying to find anything about it on their website. I can't find any At-A-Glance emails - not familiar with it. I'll update if I find out anything more.

Is it the same charge code as the one for POW measurements?

In the other office today but I believe I saw this on a non Eyezen order as well.

After submitting check the 2 letter codes on the Service Report printout. This is one of the things we're trying to figure out as it may not show up and you have to sort through the payment statement to see where and how and/or if it's being charged.

Thanks for the link Epstein. And thanks for this thread, I was uninformed and missed this as well!

    What a croc.

What extra measurements do we need for Eyezen? You provide a MRP, done.

(Remember, Eyezen 0 is just a digital SV w/o add.)

You know what this really smells like? A tariff on EssiluxMed's products...It costs the patient more than VSP's product, you make a paltry $2, and VSP makes $8.

Does this apply to VSP's lenses?

I'm pretty sure it does not.

Look, fellows, the trend is this:

You work at a "VSP shop" (your employer buys VSP). You go to VSP doctors (preferably "Premiere" so they're as VSP as can be), buy VSP frames, and get VSP lenses, from VSP labs.

    It's pretty simple.

Of course, the same can be said for EssiluxMed.

so if a patient is covered for poly, and thus technically covered for the sv poly digital upgrade, do we just charge $10 for the anti fatigue design?

Is VSP's "Eyezen killer" listed on this page? I think maybe it's the "Mobile Lenses"?

Dang it. I have to see a VSP Lab rep, now.

Actually the via mobile lenses are like the Shamir Intouch. They, just like the Intouch and Zeiss Individual 2I, are awesome for some people. As of now Unity does not have an Anti-Fatigue lens.

Also I'm about done with vsp and their frame reimbursement on certain plans. I'm ready and able to shift and be straight medical and cash pay routine over here. VSP is kidding themselves if they think that IOT Private label lenses (albeit well designed) , decent AR and marchon frames are going to make them compete with a REAL lens company and a REAL frame company (with a currently failing retail model).

    Tall One:

If EssiluxMed gave you a free pair of RayBans or sumptin', what would you tell them about fixing their failing retail model?

Well as far as Essilor, though I despise them in many ways and give them money in others, I don't know that I could improve their business model. Luxottica, at least around me, is staffed with people who don't know what they are doing, and they have relied on their frames to bring people in. I'm too busy today to think of a plan that would have helped them but it doesn't really even matter because what ever is "next" is coming now.

I do believe Luxottica needs Essilor more than Essilor needs Luxottica though.

I'm curious about this as well. If the pt is covered for poly do we now charge them $10 for Eyezen?

I just spoke with a VSP rep yesterday, and the Technical Add-On is for ALL bump lenses (Eyezen, Relax, Zeiss Digital etc.). They realized there weren't charging any additional cost for a bump other than the digital aspheric cost and decided to add on this new category to increase revenue.

I have no say in, nor any problem with, how VSP decides to charge their members for materials.

I do have a problem when it's an "itemized out", easy-to-forget, add-on charge.

Why the heck just not add it into the main patient out of pocket cost, and skip the whole drama?

Because then, to the patient, it looks like we're tacking a bunch of things onto their ticket to milk them dry. "But my insurance said I don't pay anything for lenses!," they say, pointing furiously at a $0 copay for SV lenses...
