Employment characteristics

According to census and National Household Survey data, women held about 74% of the jobs in this occupation in 2011, a percentage that has been rising significantly since 1991 (57%). The increase in the number of women in this occupation is also reflected in the data from the Ordre des opticiens d'ordonnances du Québec. Approximately 74% of the Order's members in March 2015 were women, up from only 38% in 1988.

It is natural, women are more patient, doing better job of sales guide, making patients feel good, etc. Optical retail business suits better for women.

When I started in 1990, the business seemed predominantly male. In every optical workplace I've been in since 1996, it has been overwhelmingly female. Anecdotal evidence, to be sure, but still.
