    Question

Gotta pretty silly question here, but here it goes anyways:
At the Optical store I used to work out before I moved, we used a particular screw for just about ANY frame - I called it my "Fail-Safe Screw". Saved me tons and tons of time instead of fishing around the damn screw drawers, which I despise!
I'm not the most "technical" person in the world - I'm primarily on the floor selling!!
But, here in my new store, much to my dismay, we don't have a full time lab tech yet!! (Just opened!) So I'm STUCK!!!
Anyways, could you recommend a screw that has proven most successful for you???
    Thanks!!

Been a long time since confronted with such a situation, but seems that one you could count on being descreet is best.

I won't bore you with the double entendres.

I always liked using McCray Optical. Screw #300 fits just about everything, and #301 is the same head and shaft diameter but a bit longer (don't start...)

Their #361 is the nut & bolt set of choice, and # 314 for nosepads. I don't have a catalog here @ home, but those numbers sound right, though I'm not sure if McCray is Canadian only or not.

Currently using Hilco stuff, but not crazy about it, and the heads strip easily.

    Hello Mermaid
I never found a screw that works on almost everything as to the big variety in screw sizes out there.
I use mostly Vigor/Grobet screws 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 size about 5mm long, can always cut the excess of and file it down a bit.
I found those 3 sizes works on about everything, also carry a 1.1 nut and bolt combo for stripped barrels.

Thge cure (almost) all screw we use is the Sadler 04-9095, its 1.37x4.4 mm. If thats a bit short, then the Sadler 04-1071 its 1.27x5 mm.

    Dear Merm
    Some opticians are incorrigible.
They suffer from many aberrations, vertical imbalances and such. If they go too far looking for one good screw for all times they tend to go into a state of coma and eventually end up in prism for light years. Many wander about patternless for ever.
    Forgive them.
