Question Where have the quality industry publications gone?

Has advertising quality, ethics and truthfulness got up and left in Canada?

Not too many years ago, I used to look forward to receiving the numerous industry publications (in paper form) each month by mail chalk full of interesting articles, opinions, insights and serendipity. It was always a good read over a java and a great way to relax and stay informed.

I have to admit how disappointed I am now a days with the content and how these publications will accept all advertising from any company without fact checking or background searches. Yes I know that these publications rely fully on advertising and donation revenue to stay afloat but man it seems that integrity has flown out the window.

I received the latest edition a few days ago of a well known publication. The latest copy contains an ad from a lens company claiming to be 100% independent with no retail affiliation whatsoever and only service independent ECP's. Yet they process huge volume in lenses for one of the largest retail grocery chains in Canada and sell glasses online under trademark and multiple alias online platforms.

Shouldn't the editors be held accountable for accuracy of content or has it become the wild west where we are all just spoon fed the jargon???

Well, I can see you find Fox "truthful", and while they are NOT here, we do have our own truth source on Optiboard.

As "opticianry" has dumbed down in recent years so has our professional media which has descended to the level of Dr Seuss (with apologies to the memory of Dr. Seuss.)

You have to go into the enemy camp to sites like this if you want any substantive reading:

    https://www.aaopt.org/home/section-ovs

    https://www.aoa.org/

There are many other sites on line.

One should not assume. You can keep FOX on your side of the border where it belongs.

Trade magazines have to keep their eyes and ears open, and realize the trends of the business they deal with, in fashion and or volume much earlier than we do.

Very simple, they spoon feed you what you like to see, but have to adjust their income, to what is available in the advertising sector.

Advertising cost is also reflected in the advertisers selling prices, the more you sell the moore you can advertise.

I look forward to 20/20 and Invision every month for different reasons. If youre looking for a print publication that does not accept advertising dollars I would pay if it had excellent content.

The US and Canadian markets are very similar are they not? What kind of content are you looking for that is Canadian specific?

Ophthalmic Optics in Canada is a silently very turbulent domain, as the professional associations have been financially supported and influenced by Essilor France, for at least 30 years, and the optical retail business has been deregulated in British Columbia and Quebec, and it looks like Ontario is next in line.

That would cover about 65% of the Canadian population.......................

So it looks like big changes could be on the way for the optical retail business in Canada within the near future .

Not too many years ago there were a few with just Canadian content in print form with great insights, articles, technology, classified etc.

Fast forward to today where the entire content is just endless frame advertising, useless fromage and corporate group selfies.

Easiest way to get that is to ask Google and you get a large list in a second.
