    Drilling glass!

I have some left-over plano polarized glass with mirror and backside AR! Woo!

    But no frame.

But! I have a rimless mount without lenses.

How likely am I to be able to get those lenses drilled for a Silhouette-type mount? (Those holes are awfully close together.)

They would be for a 5-year-old boy.

Not really. They'd be for me.

Go for it doc! I’ll hook you up with my OMD to pull the slivers of glass out of your eye....

Seriously, compression mounts aren’t suitable for fracturable materials (including cr, mid Index, others..) Glass is best suited in screw/nut mount rimless. More play inside the holes.

I agree that is a bad idea. Just get some sturdy zyl that is slightly smaller and matches the shape

You don't really want rimless sunglasses though do you.

As said, a conventional rimless mount will work fine, but not a compression mount.

In that case, go for it. Please share a pic when it's done. And don't worry too much, drilling glass though more difficult has been done many, many times. I've seen loads in my career that lasted years.

If it were me, I'd get the hot glue gun, and go find a really small stick outside. I'd glue the little stick in between the lenses. Then, I'd go find two more longer stocks. Glue them to the outsides of the lenses. BINGO! instant rimless, and a custom frame 'mounting' that will be the envy of labs across the globe! :) If you don't feel up to the task yourself, I'm absolutely certain Warby, Zenni, Davis Vision, or Spectera has a lab monkey that can do it for you!

    ...I'll get my coat...

Like fine wine, drilling oil improves with age. Still 1/3 full. Make me an offer. If shipping to any location warmer than CT, must be personally delivered by wife and me. You pay all costs.

Shame on all of you guys and girls.......................................

There was a time when that was not a question. It was a fact, that even if it was a -7.00 or higher D lens, it was easy to drill holes with a diamond drill and the right coolant through any glass lens by hand.

You could also refer to the B&L Job Coach if you are fortunate enough to have a copy. It would also help in you had a "real" lens drill.

Chris, nobody said you can't drill glass. Did a lot of them in my wholesale years. The question was drilling glass for a compression mount. Compression mounts will fracture with glass, especially a plano lens. Heck, even CR will fracture in compression mounts. Screw and hex nut set-ups are a completely different animal.

There were no compression mounts in those days.........there were the Numonts worn by everybody and there were dozens of shapes you could do. What I hated most to drill were the Flint lenses

In addition, one would typically drill *before* tempering I would expect. While these plano lenses are no doubt already tempered. That's a fun little shard filled explosion waiting to happen.

I have never drilled glass, but I thought polarized glass was not tempered due to there being a laminated layer?

I hadn't heard this before, and that might make sense with heat tempering. Not sure if the chem temper process would be better or not. Probably depends greatly on the quality of the film, and the lens bond.
