Question Multifocal prescriptions and ordering online

I work dispensing in a small clinic alongside two optometrists. Recently, we had a patient with a multifocal prescription. The standard "sphere cylinder x axis plus addition" format of prescription was given after the exam. The patient later contacted the office requesting the prescription broken up into separate distance and near prescriptions. We say, oh well that Rx is both, the optician wherever you purchase will be able to use it for two pairs. Then the patient tells us they are buying online and don't know how to read it themselves.
So my question is: are we required to provide the Rx broken into two like this?
Online optical products are currently deregulated and the patient does have the complete Rx (intended to be interpreted by a professional). I feel as though we are not required to assist with online purchasing...

    They need an edumacation.

I strongly agree with you on two points:
    1. We are not required to give away services.
    2. "The optician wherever you purchase can design your lenses".

You have to tell them that they are designing the lenses themselves, if they do it online. You'll be happy to help them design their lenses, for them, but there is a fee. (The fee is: your retail on a given lens design minus your wholesale. Yeah.)

    Great first post!

The law states that information is to be given. Not that it has to be adjusted so that the patient can interpret it themselves. When general medical information is requested, it isn't rewritten in layman's terms.

I think this sort of situation usually falls into the 'company policy' category though. Either way:

You can also now say that it is illegal in Ontario to sell glasses (or contact lenses) online and you are unable to comply with online requests.

Ya, like that is going to stop a consumer from placing their order.

You can't stop someone from speeding, but you can fine them if they are caught.

When are optical retailers (= opticians) going to admit that online sales are here to stay and their presence is increasing at the near speed of light.

With the announcement that Amazon has now started to sell fresh food online last week, by investing millions of Dollars into the venture, one should assume that the action has been seriously planned and calculated before starting it.

You can not buy glasses online in Ontario ..............but you are allowed to smoke pot on the downtown street corner.

And if Essilor wins their appeal, it will forever change the landscape and legislation.

The landscape will be changed in triple speed anyway, after the merger is approved, within the next 2 months.
