    Wave Hubble Contacts

The Hubble contacts sitting in front of me are everything the ads promised: two weeks’ worth of soft, daily lenses in robin’s-egg-blue packaging. They arrived promptly, one week after I placed an order on Hubble’s website, and three days after the company notified me the contacts had shipped. The lenses were packed in cream-colored boxes and came with a five-step guide, illustrated in different shades of pastel. There’s only one problem: I don’t wear contacts, and I ordered these using a fake prescription from a made-up doctor.

Fantastic article. I myself have had to deal with them on three separate occasions. Thanks to our ever continuing goal to educate patients about online optical purchases and why it might be the wrong choice for them even though they are trying to save a buck or two, Hubble has been unsuccessful trying convert some of my patients.

Or........ You can just buy Acuvue 1-Day Moist for about the same/lesser price (after rebate) at your neighborhood retailer.

But the masses flock to the web assuming it's a "better deal."

Billing groups/contact lens distributors have been offering subscription services for patients as well.

I mean who wouldn't want to stick an unregulated piece of medical equipment into their eyes?

Funny, I always thought that the Feds held the view that changing a doctors medical prescription to something else (precisely what these clowns do with their lenses) was the fast track to the clink.

I got a janky phone call from (confirming my practice name and asking me to listen to a recording after already having a human talk to me) them regarding a patient of mine that had not been seen in three years for 1200 lens. Even the patient after I called him was in dis-belief that this was even possible.

I would suggest offices keep a list of all of these illegal dispenses, and contact the FDA, your local Attorey's General, and perhaps the FTC as well? Can't hurt to lodge as many official complaints as possible. I have to think the only reason they haven't been shut down completely as yet is that no one has bothered to really report the extend of their law breaking activities.

I'm sure they are operating within some bare minimum of the law. If I had the time to do what you suggested, I would. However the first time they get sued, that will likely garner more attention to the problem than us all just being ****** about it.

I'm not sure what 'bar minimum' that could be. They are constantly and blatantly flaunting medical device prescription law. They change prescriptions without any doctor consultation or approval. They fail to actually verify and confirm with prescribing doctors offices. They fill and ship insane amounts of incorrect, untested, unverified lenses to patients across the country. ALL of which is patently illegal. Just needs to garner the attention of proper individuals and institutions. I know here at least, our OD association is saving lists of every violation, and reporting them to the state AGs office. But it seems like federal involvement would be highly prudent as well.

Ok so I just had a lens verification on my machine this am. It began with a person speaking for about 2 seconds and then a computerized person speaking over him so neither one is understandable. Then they gave the power of the contacts with 375 lenses/per eye. No contact lens type given, no base curve, just a material. Then a reminder on how the doctor is responsible for providing the rx since the patient did not provide the rx. No patient name was given. The name of the company was not given. They did give a contact person as Paul Rogers and a phone number. Found out Paul Rodgers at Hubble. When I returned the call to find out who the patient was, I didn't get anyone and had to leave a message. Anyone else run into this?

Yep. Call your state AG's office, and log every one of these. To call it blatantly illegal is far too kind.

Good advise. Thank you! I'll let my office manager know.

You're whistling into the wind if you think the Fed's will take this up.

Check out my marvelous state boards position on this complaint of mine...

When enough voices are joined, it will be impossible to ignore on a state, and eventually national level. But it will take time. This is how that starts.

Just had another call from Hubble. Those calls are so weird. They called in a script
    375 lenses for -1.00
    375 lenses for -1.00
    methafilcon A

The patient's Rx is Clarity 1 day Toric (silicone hydrogel)
    -1.00 -0.75 x 180 ou

Grrrrrr So frustrating. At least 1-800 contacts usually gets the Rx and lens type right.

It's done completely on purpose. They are changing the script - which is illegal in all 50 states. Contact your state Atty General.
