    Polishing Glass lenses?

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice in terms of polishing glass lenses. I've a lot of experience hand-polishing plastic but haven't ever done glass.

I've been working on a -24 and despite perfect frame selection obviously there is a bit of thickness there... I'd like to make it transparent. Can it be done? Should it be attempted?

    Thanks,
    Robert

It has been done for hundreds of years over time and can still be done these days.

Are you talking about edge polishing? If I remember correctly, red rouge on a buffing wheel will do the job.

As long as you use a solid felt wheel and the white polishing for glass you should be ok to do edges.

Hand pan, plano lap, cerium oxide and a steady hand will do the job.

Just to let you all know, with your advice i was able to produce a really good polish. The lenses looked significantly thinner and the client was ultimately happy with them.

    So a success story.

Thank you to everyone! Merry Christmas
