    "Clear" polarized lenses...

I have a patient who's adamant that Zeiss makes an Individual lens that is clear and polarized. "It's on their web site".

I've never heard of such a thing. To block phased light requires some type of tint.

    Is he right?

Also- Not having dealt with it- how does Duravision Platinum stack up against Avance and is their blueblocker AR better for all purpose and night driving?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Maybe the DriveSafe? It talks a LOT about glare reduction on a clear lens.
Have I told you today how much I hate poly?

A fully polarized lens will block at least 50% of the incoming light.

I talked with my lab(Zeiss) they do not have a clear polarized, but the lab rep thought maybe the patient saw something about the transitions vantage lens. The Zeiss Individual 2 lenses do come in vantage.

Sometimes, patients see/hear things about photographic filters - of which Zeiss is of course, a major name. The big thing in digital photography is circular polarizing filters that block very little light. I wonder if he's getting his marketing pages crossed / confused like that at all? They certainly aren't clear, but are much lighter than a traditional polar sun lens. They also make some linear polarizers as well, but most common are the circular varieties. A possibility he only saw "Zeiss polarizing filter" and assumed it was ophthalmic lens related? *shrug*

Younger makes a grey A and brown A, but both are still @ 15%.
As for HEV AR, I see no difference between the Duravision Blue and a regular AR at night.

My very first post on Optiboard (the version before this current board- probably back in 1997 or so) was an inquiry regarding whether clear polarizing lenses were possible! If you think about it, it would be great to eliminate reflected glare in a clear lens! A gentleman named Darryl Meister answered the question (and I had to read his answer 4-5 times to understand it, but the back and forth kicked off our friendship).

Basically, he explained that a polarizing film is like a window blind. Sure, you could have a clear polarizer- but it would have the same effectiveness as a clear window blind (the problem being even when the blind is closed it would have no effect). Turns out there ARE clear polarizers (they use them with lasers), but they involve stacks of mirrors- so they aren't really compatible with ophthalmic applications.

Anyway, thanks for stirring a memory!

Transitions Vantage Poly is terrible (unless they have changed the formula for TransVII which I actually suspect they have since the release of the Trivex front Poly ST28 stuff), however in CR39 and Trivex it is a beautiful thing. Craig used to always say how nice it was and I thought he was either mad or talking about a different product than the gross purple poly lens I had made my brother (he's a photochromic afficianado).

I just made a trivex vantage and wow it was amazing! Totally cool product. The guy I made it for I gave it as a free upgrade because he gets close to double digit glasses from me every year so I said what the heck.

I like everything about the Vantage except the incredibly slow fade, which makes the lens completely unsuited to anything other than full-time outside wear.

^ Agreed. And if that is the case, I know my patient will be happier with a real polarized lens.

I also hate that Vantage is not available in 1.67 despite Essilor announcing that it would be, because I would really like to try it myself.

It would look crappy purple and not ever get really dark like the poly one. Vantage is totally different product in CR39 and Trivex imo

As I recall, when Vantage launched, there was a release date for the 1.67 version, which was then pushed back a year. Then it was just kind of quietly acknowledged that it was never coming out. Clearly, there was some technical obstacle that couldn't be surmounted. It's fine; I'm happy with switching to polarized sunglasses (though I've recently lost my favorite pair and can't begin to afford replacing them).
