    VSP and Walmart

Here in Oklahoma we are hearing a rumor VSP and Walmart are talking about merging. This is because Walmart cannot have optometrist in Walmart. The have figured out to go the initiative petition to circumvent legislature. This will kill the independent optometrist.

I'll never understand why VSP doesn't go the "good" insurance route, if they go the corporate chain way like it seems they want to year after year they WILL get crushed by Essilux. I really don't get it at all. They just aren't going to win that way. The only way I see them winning is by strengthening their indy ties, providing service above and beyond what you get at a chain store (and winning here just means a big slice of a pie). They will crash and burn on a race to the bottom.

Once the merger is Ok ed, they might be crushed or absorbed.

If the merger goes through as planned, I don't doubt you are right. All the more reason for them to do the things that Essilor and Luxotticas' retail ventures just don't accomplish.

They have to play the retail chain game because essilux already crushed them years ago when going after their key accounts. At the end of the day, they are an insurance company, and they can't attract major employers if essilux has taught employers to look for retail outlets to "better serve" their employees.
