    a blog for patients

Hey there everyone...long time, no post.

I recently created a blog to share information and educate patients. Take a look, feel free to share, and please be gentle ;)

Jedi, that is one classy site! "Well done" doesn't begin to cover it. Outstanding!

Looks like a great site!........For the DIY'ers! ( I saw nothing in the blogs that indicated the importance in having a professional Optician involved.) Though I did see the importance of what info you need to get while you "showroom" the opticals you go into....

Well, I liked the bit about frame fitting:

"While these numbers can all be important in finding the right fit for your face, it never tells the full picture. As stated earlier, the way the frame is put together can change what fits dramatically."

I took that as a warning not to try to buy in a venue where you can't try them on. There's no blog entry on taking your own PD either. Although I do like the suggestion of making an explicit suggestion (and good advice) to let a pro help, maybe a site like this helps would-be-DIYers come to the conclusion on their own. (We do tend to hit the point so hard it's off-putting...if we really want to persuade rather than preach to the choir, I think this wasn't a bad line drive.)

    Edit:

I just clicked on the button for "older posts" and discovered a great tale about the value of good dispensing under "the doctor isn't always right," plus an article about the virtues of $1000 glasses.

    Thanks so much everyone!

I created this with the intent of educating patients, whether they go to me or not. And to drive home the importance of an educated and informed optician. For the patient to understand we aren't "upselling" we are recommending the products that suit them best.

Maybe I need to drive that home more.

In a few of the earlier posts I did try and address the importance of a skilled optician guiding through the minefield.

Honestly part of the point of this is to show how important it is to have that optician involved and to show why online orders almost never work out.

Nicely done, in a way that laymen will understand.

A good addition, if you are so inclined, is to continue with Progressive lenses. Most places now include Freeform in their formulary. This is a most misunderstood area of our business, and many opticians still have difficulties explaining them to their patients. Having a non-optical person understand the difference between this and molded designs, may go a long way. All major lens vendors have great designs in their portfolios.

    Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much EyeGal! Anything that helps to make patients more educated on what to ask for, and why they need a good optician :)

I love this! I might have to recommend this to my patients to refer to! I do a lens menu for my patients where I go over things in person and highlight as I go so they can take it home. This is a much more modern way to go! Thank you!

Ps: Little typo in the word sandwiched

Polarized lenses are created in a completely different fashion. There is actually a film sandiwched inside the clear lens (for most versions of polarized…see Maui Jim below). This film is actually made of thousands of microscopic lines packed so closely together they give the appearance of color. These lines are placed so closely together to handle the glare.

Very nice article! I'm actually quite enjoying the blog, now just to make the general public read it.
-Poly is the best substrate for coatings.
    -Poly is extremely scratch resistant.
    -Poly is extremely impact resistant.
    -Poly is unparalleled in clarity.
-Poly is much lighter than traditional crown glass.
Like poly, you can trust me about 40% of the time.

    Thanks Barry and McAnerin,

Some of the public is reading it. Just got a request for info via email from a layperson in Boston. He permitted me to share his email as a blog post, so that's the latest one up now:

I'm a fan of the new Hoya stick we got sent. Gave us a basically inexhaustible supply.

Well, I'm frustrated, but I guess i shouldn't be surprised. Posted my blog on Ask a Lab Guy on Facebook. Requesting everyone to review it and give me some constructive criticism. Was outright attacked for not knowing anything and was told it was going to be locked.

I went ahead and deleted rather than have that flame attack. I just wanted advice on how to improve it for Fraks sake.

Dont be upset. While it can be a source of decent optical knowledge, ATLG can be absolutely miserable if you do not subscribe to their "Holier Than Thou Screw What You Think Because You Are Wrong" line of thinking. You are better off than dealing with that nonsense.

Keep up the good work and keep doing you. You will be fine

I agree with newguy, what your doing takes time and effort. I admire your dedication to the trade.
