    Multnomah Falls, Oregon

When I worked at SOLA Optical, I used to go up to Portland, OR on business quite often. On a couple of trips I had some extra time which I took to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the waterfalls there, including the magnificent Multnomah Falls.

I always wanted to take Marlena there so when we had the opportunity after the eclipse, we drove over there and visited the falls and Gorge. It was the day after the eclipse and the place was crawling with people, particularly the Multnomah Falls. It's really sad to read about the fire that has swept the area and it looks like the entire area around the Multnomah Falls may have burnt, except for the Lodge which they managed to save. It is with this in mind that I post this picture taken just 15 days ago.

The situation is not good. Smoke in the metro area has been really high - expected to get better starting WED afternoon. Many evacuations between Cascade Locks all the way to East Troutdale. Fire as of this morning is 30,000 acres and growing. So far they say the views you get from I-84 (which is closed) in the gorge are still good. It is the views on the trails - Pacific Crest trail included, that will be poor. All started by a 15 year old (w/ friends) throwing fireworks into the canyon above Cascade Locks. The fire season up here in the PNW has been rough this year.

We moved from Oregon to Florida nine months ago. Thank goodness we are out of wildfire danger although we are about to get schmucked by hurricane Irma. It seems that you just cant win.
