I am a patient in need of progressive lenses. I have frames that were measured 32mm in depth. A few optometrists/salespeople have commented that the frames are a little skimpy for progressives and that I should get a deeper frame, somewhere around 40mm. So I set out to shop for a deeper frame.
In boutique #1, I explain the above to optometrist #1. She tells me that 18mm of depth is allocated to the progressive lense and everything above and below those 18 mm is aesthetic filler. Therefore, she says that a deeper frame is irrelevant past 18mm down from my pupil.
Optometrist #2 tells me in a generic way (without the above technical explanation) that the depth of the frame is largely irrelevant.
Optometrist #3 tells me that optometrist #1 is wrong and that while 18 mm is the minimum depth for progressives, a deeper frame that accommodates more than 18mm will increase the field of vision for reading bc the entire remainder of the lense down the very bottom will be powered for reading.
Who is right? I dont love the way a 40mm frame looks on my face, but if it improves my vision experience I will get them. I'm just unclear, based on the comments of optometrist #1 and #2, if they will actually improve my vision experience.
Thanks for everyone's input.
