There is a fundamental core body of learning required to actas a competent optician anywhere in the world. Some optical basics are testedby ABO and NCLE, but only at an elementary level. On the other hand theAdvanced ABO and Advanced NCLE required a level of opticianry understandingthat confirms the optical knowledge competencies of the holder.
Very few are equipped to learn these simply by reading atextbook or studying online. You would need competent mentoring by motivatedworkplace colleagues to support the learning process, and this appears to be thebasic principal behind multi-year apprenticeship training. However, results arevery mixed as demonstrated on formal competency exam outcomes.
Basic ABO and NCLE exams must be regarded as only some evidenceof basic understanding of opticianry principals. To maintain the profession, USopticians must demand of ABO/NCLE either a new ‘basic optician’ designation or perhapsthe addition of ‘NEW’ to their credential, much like all new motor vehicle driversmust exhibit. This ‘NEW’ ABO or NCLE designation would encourage those motivatedto advance to a higher level of optical proficiency that would include thecompetencies already listed in opticianry.
The learning categories ‘MUST KNOW’(core learning)and ‘SHOULD KNOW’ must bestressed. The third category of learning... ‘NICE TO KNOW’ is wide open tointerpretation and its inclusion can be debated.
Premium training in a timely manner is the future.
