More Segmented Multifocals Now Available in Transitions Signature Poly Composite

Transitions® Signature® VII Polycarbonate Composite Technology Expanded To More Segmented Multifocals

    Transitions Signature
polycarbonate composite lens technology has been expanded to include FT35 bifocal lenses and 7 x 28 trifocal lenses, in both gray and brown. This is in addition to the FT28 bifocal lenses released last year. This means even more segmented multifocal lens wearers can enjoy the unsurpassed photochromic performance of Transitions Signature VII lenses.

Why is this expansion important for eye care practices?
    Transitions Signature
is the photochromic lens of choice for many patients, both for fashion and to enhance comfort. This expansion provides an opportunity for eye care professionals to significantly heighten the satisfaction of patients who wear polycarbonate multifocals. Eight out of 10 patients prefer Transitions Signature lenses to clear lenses, and now eyecare professionals don't have to find another option when these bifocal and trifocal wearers request a Transitions brand lens. They can dispense authentic Transitions Signature lenses in a polycarbonate composite material.

Just how significant is the market for bifocal and trifocal lenses?

Approximately one in five pairs of lenses sold today are segmented multifocals, and a majority of those are bifocals. “Despite growing demand for progressive and digital designs, there is still a significant demand in the market for segmented lenses,” said Catherine Rauscher, global director for lenscaster partners, Transitions Optical.

What is unique about this product?

Younger Optics and Transitions Optical have developed a polycarbonate composite lens that incorporates a thin photochromic front surface bifocal or trifocal layer made of Trivex®—resulting in a lens delivering Transitions Signature VII performance and superb segment cosmetics in a product that is surfaced, polished, edged and dispensed just like a clear polycarbonate lens,” said David Rips, president and CEO of Younger Optics.

    Availability
Transitions Signature polycarbonate composite lenses are now available in FT28 and FT35 bifocals and 7 x 28 multifocals, in both gray and brown, exclusively from Younger Optics through any optical laboratory.

    What do you know!

I wonder how competitively these are prices versus their trivex counterparts?

Any plans for 8x35 as well?

Hi Hayde, no plans at the moment for 8x35 in Transitions Signature Poly Composite. We do have the 8x35 Transitions Signature Gray in Hard Resin 1.50, but you probably already know that!

Check here for Hard Resin specs

In my experience they cost about the same. So really its about processing ease/thinner lenses - otherwise the trivex is better all around.

So I was testing the limits on the composite lenses and noticed during processing that you can tell exactly when you go through the transition layer. I was being quite ambitious with this at the request of 'thin as possible' and have learned my lesson. Needless to say, the lens photographed has gone to the graveyard.

Thought I'd share to help save someone else confusion and time!

    Hi Quince,
Sorry that didn't work out for you. I have something else that might save lab techs confusion and time: The Processing Guidelines! I hope you have a copy of this somewhere, but in case you don't, there's a PDF online that you can download and print: processing-guidelines-transitions-poly-composite

If there are any other technical questions about processing this product, lab folks can always email

FYI: We have found that the "bubble" above the seg ledge will leave a little distortion, especially in lower plus and minus lenses. We always use the old fashioned lacquer coating in flat tops or try to press out the bubble.
