Redhot Jumper WP has now entered the eye testing industry..............................

    From Vision Monday:
NEW YORK—Warby Parker is stepping into the controversial field of online vision testing with the launch of a mobile refraction service that lets current customers measure their visual acuity using an app. Called the
Warby Parker Prescription Check the test “helps eligible folks with expired eyeglasses prescriptions get a new one—without setting foot in a doctor’s office,” according to the company’s promotional literature.

As per post in the general Forum WP has now entered the eye testing industry.

How will this affect the Canadian optical scene, and what to do about it.

There has been a long standing issue with 'simple eye test' or 'simple refraction' not having the ability to be a stand alone option and always includes a 'full eye exam'.

Yes we all know that regular full eye exams are recommended, however patients that have already had a full exam but prefer to have an Rx freshened up to purchase a new pair of glasses should also be an option.

That said, I do not support the process being performed by a simple app - autorefractor yes, app no.

I know that some optometrists are just offering RX checks already in between full exams sometimes @ no charge probably to compete with this

Redhot Jumper Newest app of warby parker..............................

    Newest App of Warby Parker

    By Jonah Comstock
    May 24, 2017

Online eyeglasses retailer Warby Parker has launched a new app to offer online eye exams to users. While a number of companies offer ocular telehealth in various forms to users in regulatory-friendly states, and some of those companies also sell contact lenses, Warby Parker would be the first glasses retailer to venture into the space. The FDA-registered app, called Prescription Check, is currently being offered for free to users in California, Florida, New York, and Virginia. It's also only available for those who currently own Warby Parker glasses.

The Company plans to expand to additional states in the future, but also may not continue to offer the app free of charge.

Like most other smartphone eye exams from companies like Opternative and Simple Contacts,Prescription Check doesn't replace a comprehensive eye exam; it merely measures refractive error. Users are still encouraged to get their eyes checked regularly for things like cataracts or glaucoma. The vision test takes about 20 minutes and requires 12 feet of space, and it requires that users have both a smartphone and a computer.

The underlying issue is whether a refraction is a medical procedure or the equivalant of measuring your shoe size with a Bannock Devise.

For years we have tied the refraction into the "comprehensive eye exam" procedure treating it as a single entity. As we revisit this issue we will see the ultimate seperation of the eye health exam; diagnosis/treatment from the measurement of refractive error. Of course, there will be situations where refraction will have a place in the comprehensive eye exam but in most cases refractions will be handled in a more retail environment rather than in the Doctors office.

............then the American Continent will join the rest of the World where glasses are not a medical device.

Opternative is some online app that lets you do your own Rx for $50.

    https://www.opternative.com/

They are apparently suing WP for offering the "same" (although free) service.

For probably that reason, WP's vision check app is offline.

    optio.....................good post

Eyewear e-commerce giant Warby Parker is accused of signing partnership contracts and NDAs with online eyeglass prescription test startup Opternative, then stealing the technology to launch its own competing “Prescription Check” feature. That’s according to a legal complaint filed by Opternative last month that was unsealed today as the lawsuit unfolds.

Opternative is seeking extensive financial compensation for damages due to breach of contract and theft of trade secrets, and reassignment of a Warby Parker eye test patent it says is derivative of its inventions.

However, don't forget that the rest of the world largely considers contact lenses to be medical devices. That would leave them outside the scope of opticianry (though admittedly, those laws aren't generally enforced).

    I beg to differ.........................

Having been born into an optical family in Switzerland my sister and me were fathers guinea pigs when he got into contact lenses in the late 1940s.

The family business is still there, with the contact lens department still functioning in a non medical but optical environment.

Anybody can refract or measure blood pressure. Prescribing from the results is a controlled act at least in Ontario

Dispensing glasses is still a controlled act in Ontario. They just ignore the law and wait to be sued. If the courts strike down the law then dispensing of glasses and prescribing of glasses will no longer be a controlled act in Ontario. In the mean time, they are still breaking the law as currently written.

They must be filling Rx s all day long in those WP stores on prime spots at their pricing, without being taken to court by the opticians, neither the optometrists.
