Blue Jumper This news is all over the papers today..........................

Ford is canceling plans to build a new plant in Mexico. It will invest $700 million in Michigan instead, creating 700 new U.S. jobs.

This news is all over the papers today..........................

How will this new trend spill over into the optical business ?

There have many big optical labs been moved to Mexico as well as to the far East over the last few years.

Most optical lenses today are manufactured in Thailand and some other areas.

Is the optical trade important enough to bring a few thousand jobs back to North America ?

If an important corporation as Ford has been convinced not to move away with another section of the business, how important is the market here for the optical corporations ?

if you read the small print, ford is doubling the size of its EXISTING mexican plant...that makes small cars.
the market for small cars is dwindling in US ,as of now
    hmmm $1million/person?

Are there any U.S. optical corporations to do a "patriotic" thing, or all a bunch of Japanese and Frenchies, with a smattering of Germans?

I'll join you, after I walk home in my made in the USA shoes, sitting on my made in the USA sofa, listening to music on my made in the USA speakers and amplifiers, wearing lenses that were fabricated in the USA. The whiskey however, is Canadian.

The answer is no. Market conditions in North America have changed so drastically over the past few years to a point where it's just not possible to manufacture in NA at a profitable level...if it were, we would still have some companies casting blanks.

Patriotism means nothing to a corporation when it comes to the bottom line.

Which means that if the USA would start taxing imports at different and higher levels for products, that could have been made in North America by these corporations, that could make them think about coming back.

Without talking any politics which is "taboo" right here on OptiBoard, I would vote in any country of this Globe for anybody that would have the goal of reducing or eliminating government corruption.

US has a significant share in the aerospace and defence industry, according to certain arguments, relocation of certain industries to developing countries would allow them to procure expensive goods from developed countries and boost exports in the higher value added industries. In theory, with better redistribution of manpower and resources, it can be a win-win approach. In reality, with increasing automation, obstacles posed by income inequality, lack of social mobility etc, there will be people left better off and others left with the shorter end of the stick.

Chris, I remember you had participated in a defense project before too, if I'm not wrong

tf50fm...................yes that will happen, but has happened forever when an industry got modernized.

15 years ago, a company renting part of my building producing sticks of welding flux on a 25 to 30 year old huge machine, the only one of its kind, got sold to a large Toronto corporation who dismantled and moved the machine to China, to continue production there, so they could compete better in the new oil fields of Alberta.

I lost a good renter, 5 people lost their jobs and another product sold for less money.

Idea LenSync independent labs are coming in 2017 that can take work back from China!

I hear you loud and clear. As the Founder of LenSync we are launching a brand of lenses with a delivery model that can compete with imported lenses! This is not a dream and the ink is already dry on the deals. I am not trying to get the ECP the lowest price possible but deliver an buying and ordering experience that brings lab work back to the USA!

The level of technology and consistent quality is why we can charge more and deliver a value.

We are rolling this out now and signing up a few ECP's as we start the beta sites.

Focal Point in Berkley CA and the Chemistrie lab in Pittsburgh are the early adopters along with my store. We are adding labs and ECP's as fast as we can to ensure it is smooth for all parties. Mr. Santini is next to be hooked-up to the platform! Excited to have him on the team and part of our beta users.

I met with an OD yesterday who is vocal industry LEADER- but did not request permission to publish his name yet- who saw the vision and believes this offering can create a lens offering for independents that can bring work back from overseas and the internet. Imagine a system so powerful that consumers will want to come to your office to get it done the best way possible. We will push internet buyers back to our ECP's with our delivery model. This is the Uber that the industry has needed and it is here today!

LenSync works directly with MEI, Santinelli, Huvitz, Optotech, Optivision, Thin Tech already with more to be announced soon.

The first group of labs and ECP's will take on the platform in 2017.

Redhot Jumper You will be getting rich and famous so fast ...............................

You will be getting rich and famous so fast, that Essilor will buy you out before you can ask a few hundreds of millions of Dollars for it.

Do not forget to register a world wide patent on it, or they will copy it in China or India.
