we found this in an optical shop and have learned that the temple of the frames fit in the grooves but we still aren't sure what purpose it servers. any info would be great. thanks! Also sorry if this shouldn't be posted in this area. wasn't sure which one to post in.
I have one. It is a BerDel (Lux) spring hinge tool. The temple is inserted into the top portion and the lever is activated to allow alignment to insert temple screw with the front.
It's hard to tell from the photo... I've never seen one before. Looks like a temple bender? Or temple cutter?

Works ok, IF the spring hinge fits the slot. BerDel had a slimline spring assembly.
not the look I remember exactly, grip was pistol like, Maybe a knockoff? I remember all plastic, and a fiber type top. Just for giggles, the only spring hinge I believe that you can re-build, 1 spring, 2 steel ball bearings, I think center rod. Ask an old timer, we still have some repair kits.

Thank you Sir. I are one of these old timers. BerDel had it's on rep with focus on their Spheroflex spring hinge assemblies.
Wow! I remember using one of those, they did work very well to replace spring hinge screws.
