    Heavy smoker wears Transitions

Good morning Optiboarders! I was wondering if anyone else had ever encountered a similar situation: Husband and wife patients have Transitions that no longer activate after a year and a half. The household is at LEAST a pack a day smoking household per patient. Husband wears Transitions grey in poly and wife wears Transitions green in poly. Both patients' lenses do not activate and have a yucky yellow cast to them. I feel the heavy smoking is the culprit but I would love some feedback.

Check their lenses under the UV Meter. If the surfaces absorb all the UV to activate the lenses, and the lenses will not work, but you discovered that heavy smokers are fully protected against UV damage by their glasses.

Never heard of it and I can't imagine transition and we wouldn't be aware of it if it was smoke caused. Did you give them a good soaking bath in warm soapy water to be sure a film of nicotine wasn't stopping the uv?

I did not, but when they come to pick up their new lenses I will certainly give that a shot.

I would try to call Transitions directly at 1-800-533-2081. If I remember correctly one of the options is for Technical support, if anyone would know, they would.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was the smoking. The yellow crap you're seeing are probably tar particles that have adhered to the surface of the lens. That would definitely block UV and prevent transitions from working. No standard solvent will take it off, you'll need some powerful stuff to get that crap off, and there is no guarantee the lens and its coatings would survive. You might want to get Christ Ryser's opinion on cleaning the lens. He might know something you can use that will clean it without destroying the lens.

Simple fix: Glass PGX. It's kinda yellow to start with, and it'll still change!

Blech! LOL! We were lucky enough to have the lenses remade under their AR warranty. Once I get their original lenses back in my hot little hands I plan on trying some of these suggestions without fear of ruining the lenses. And thank you everyone for your responses!!! I love this forum!

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if yellow tar particles are blocking enough of the UV to stop the lenses. After all we use yellow tints against blue light do we not?
