    Balance Lens Question

I'd appreciate some help figuring out the best power to make the balance lens for this patient. It's something I usually leave to the lab, but this time it falls on me and I don't have the lenses in hand to visualize the differences.

    RX is
    OD Balance
    OS -6.25 -0.50 165

We are doing orma in the rt and 1.67 in the left. As the 1.67 is 30% thinner than orma I was thinking a -3 would work in orma for the rt. Thoughts?

    Welcome Julia,

I can't think of a doc I know who wouldn't cringe at the idea that a shatter-resistance lens material isn't protecting the patient's one good eye. Poly OU.

I hate when the doc leaves us guessing with this.

First is there any vision in the balance eye? If not I'd look at the current pairs power with a tendency to match that or go a little weaker for cosmetics.

If there is some vision I'd call the doc to see if we want to correct it or purposely leave it blurred. Yeah- You may catch grief for questioning but it gives you a chance to politely mention they write future rx's with a sphere power in parenthesis and "balance" written after it is a much better/clearer way of writing the prescription.

Agree don't mix the materials. Keep it in poly or trivex ou although 1.67 is very safe.

Poly or trivex ou always when a balance Rx. If the lenses are not available in poly or trivex (as in some high add rxs), use safety thickness Cr39. Protect what vision is left!
