    Varilux Comfort W2+

What does everyone think of this lens? Someone I work with that is farsighted loves it and is selling it a lot. She's tried many progressives and says this is the best one. Someone else told me it has a generous intermediate and near. Do you find this to be true?

Ive always considered the Comfort to be a near centered progressive but with the distance suffering in the higher adds but maybe that's not true with the newest version. Never heard the intermediate was generous, just the near area.

It's a solid, middle of the road sort of lens, at an average price point. I would agree that it's not mid weighted. Fairly traditional Dist and Near with the mid being the narrowest. I've not had any pt issues with narrowing of the periphery in the dist with even moderate to high adds. Though we've been fitting a higher percentage of the Physio DRx/Enhamced fit, or S Series/fit than the Comfort on balance.

I tend to use this for older folks. I probe everyone about what they do from the time they wake up till bed. spare time stuff, hobbies etc.

If they tell me they like to watch wheel of fortune and work crossword puzzles, they Id go to a comfort w2.

Essilor has for years only made incremental improvements... its still a reading emphasized design, that keeps the reading wide in every add power, but at the expense of the intermediate and the distance zone.

If they have really improved it they will provide a comparison map. If they haven't the rep will give you some song and dance about "I will see what I can do... " but never mention it again.

Anyone who says this is the "best" design has not worn very many progressive lenses.

Sharp what companies do provide maps anymore these days? They are fun to look at for whatever they are worth...

I've been fitting these along with the W3 for a few months. Today I had my first unhappy returning patient. He was previously in a comfort 2 which worked fine. He complains that the W2 is much more narrow in the reading. This with no significant change in rx and a nearly identical frame, fit and measured just like he wears the comfort 2 pair. After trouble shooting, trial framing and 20 minutes observing his movements trying to read with them, I am remaking in the comfort 2 and calling it a lesson learned. He is a low hyperope and he's just not getting the channel of vision he needs (is accustomed to) from these.

Did the add bump from a 225 to a 250 perhaps?
