Unknown custom PAL - any guesses?

Couldn't find this one in the 2016 PAL Identifier. It's being used by a local scuzzy basement quality chain, but I assume it's some form of "branded" digital PAL. The markings are the laser dots added after surfacing, and are read from the back of the lens. Looks like this:

It's a 1.74 material, and the 175 is the add of course. But can't find any listing for an "FL" mark.

Guesses as to who/what this design is and where it comes from? TIA!

I shall warrant a guess that FL stands for freeform lens.

I looked yesterday and the closest was Identity. The FL might mean focal length or work distance, the 'L' might be 'long' for corridor length, their equipment isn't setup correctly, or another lens entirely.

Trying for a single lens replacement? I'd make both if I were you.

Well Doc, my first plan was to use this information for complete world domination via a cunning plan implementing mandatory rubber pants for all citizens, distributed to the populace through my network of drunken minion pirate squirrels, leading to comprehensive mind control of my adoring citizens, perfectly bending them to my will!

    Mwahahahahahaha! AHhahahahahahahaha! HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

(Or my fall back plan was just to maybe see if I can figure out why my pt generally can't see so good with these lenses...and fix it!)

I wondered if it might be an 'Identity' lens. I tried two myself, and both were unwearable...for me anyway. But that was several years back, and I don't have any layout or marking guides of theirs to try to verify. We're looking at replacing her lenses OU most likely anyway, but just wanted to minimize tail chasing as we work out her vision issues. Trying to do our homework and all that.

Why not just fit her into a good lens you trust? I don't get it.

I get the evil plan, though. Good plan.

That's always my hope of course, that just using a solid design will improve things. But we both know that the best laid plans of rice and hens don't always work as expected! And there's that part of me that wants to know my "competition" and their tactics as completely as I can. I think it makes me a better dispenser, and positions our practice to be the regional experts with the tough problems.

If the new lens design doesn't fix things though...I'm going straight in for the box full of hampsters! :D

For what it's worth the markings aren't anything like I get from Identity. Uilleann, I do the same thing, it's like checking the pt's glasses during pre-exam for the doc.

Best guess would be a digital lab in Florida using IOT.

Considering IOT is the biggest dispenser of custom PALs in the United states it would not be a bad assumption.

Is IOT known for using the dot matrix style of laser marks on all their lenses by chance? Kinda like this:

What we see is definitely not the dot matrix style marks. These are smooth and clean, not sure if that varies from generator to generator?

I don't know but assume it's all based on the engraver not the software.

Maybe a simple novel thought, but why not call the place they were purchased and ask? One lens replacement inquiry, or make up some other bs story to find the answer. Probably get a "I've been here 2 months optician", and will fork over all you need. Way too much time and effort into finding a black hole crappie lens, jmho.

Ps. I like to know also, but in the end, do as drk said. Do what I do, do it well, good outcome. The past is exactly that.

I dunno - asking around a bit on the optical interwebs doesn't really tax my abilities over much. ;) And I like knowing more than the next guy down the block about stuff like this whenever possible. As for calling these yahoos - (having a bit of inside knowledge as to how they work as I spent two of the darkest years of my life under their yoke), they purposefully don't tell their sales people any technical details about their lenses, who makes them, or why one might be better than another for a given patient. They just tell you this is the spiff you make when you sell X lens. It's all rather slimy & disgusting, and a large reason I left. So calling to find out isn't an option with their company.

If you put the two circle markings in between the FL you get "FOOL".
What is reality but a concept unique to each of us? Can anything be classed as real when our perceptions differ greatly on so many things? Just because we see something a particular way does not make it so.

One example is when the habitual eyeglasses were made with an extremely short corridor for frequent tasks in front of a desktop monitor, for folks who wanted one pair, when two pair were clearly desirable, but convenience ultimately trumped functionality.

I know a few prescribers who do not want to know the specifics of the habitual Rx, using retinoscopy as the starting point, although most will want that info in front of them at some point before signing the Rx.

Someone in another thread commented that there are so many house designs/markings on the market that it's becoming impractical to determine the old design, that we should design the lens as needed, after a thorough discussion of the client's visual needs.

You know what we really need? ROTLEX analyzer apps on our smart phones.

Put Chilinguerian on that, if he's still in the United States.
