    Ultraviolet-Blocking Lenses Protect,
    Enhance Vision

    Health and Medicine

    Originating Technology/NASA Contribution

Based on work done at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Eagle Eyes lenses filter out harmful radiation, reduce light scattering, and permit vision-enhancing wavelengths of light, protecting eyesight while also improving visibility.
In the 1980s, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) scientists James Stephens and Charles Miller were studying the harmful properties of light in space, as well as that of artificial radiation produced during laser and welding work. The intense light emitted during welding can harm unprotected eyes, leading to a condition called arc eye, in which ultraviolet light causes inflammation of the cornea and long-term retinal damage.\

To combat this danger, the JPL scientists developed a welding curtain capable of absorbing, filtering, and scattering the dangerous light. The curtain employed a light-filtering/vision-enhancing system based on dyes and tiny particles of zinc oxide—unique methods they discovered by studying birds of prey. The birds require near-perfect vision for hunting and survival, often needing to spot prey from great distances. The birds’ eyes produce tiny droplets of oil that filter out harmful radiation and permit only certain visible wavelengths of light through, protecting the eye while enhancing eyesight. The researchers replicated this oil droplet process in creating the protective welding curtain.

A 30+ year old press release? It's not even funny. Try this instead.

I Always Thought Losing Your Sunglasses Was Something That Happened To Other People

I was a normal person with a normal life—good job, nice house, a loving husband, and the most beautiful pair of Ray-Bans in the world. I’ll never forget that day when I laid my eyes on them for the very first time at that Westgate Mall Sunglass Hut. They were just so…perfect. I remember looking down at them in my hands that day, and I couldn’t believe they were actually mine. That very minute, I vowed to myself to take good care of them forever—if those sunglasses weren’t sitting right in front of my eyes, then I would make sure they were always by my side.

Then, in the blink of an eye, my whole world came crashing down around me. It was a Saturday just like any other. I was out running some errands with my husband when it suddenly got very sunny and I instinctively reached for my sunglasses. But they weren’t there. As I started frantically looking around everywhere, my heart pounding and a cold sweat breaking out on my forehead, I turned to Thomas and asked, “Honey, do you have my sunglasses?” “No, I thought you had them—I just saw you with them two seconds ago,” he said. “I swear, I just saw them!”

I was so beside myself, we started searching places that there’s no way my sunglasses could have been—we hadn’t even gone inside the bank or the Whole Foods yet! But maybe the worst part of it was the looks of pity from strangers as I ran up to them in a wild-eyed frenzy yelling, “Please! Have you seen my sunglasses? They’re Wayfarers! I was here with them just 20 minutes ago! Someone must have seen something!”

    ............you are so right.

With all this pushing of blue light protection as the latest novelty in the optical industry, now not only by the worlds largest optical corporation, but also by every other optical lens manufacturer that is jumping in, nobody has mentioned that this idea has been around and commercialised that long ago. However this is a fact.

It is so interesting to see how an industry can re-invent itself by coming up with a different version of an old hat, and claim they just invented the latest technology.

Robert that was funny! I just had to make my husband a new pair of prescription sunglasses. Last year around this time he was swimming in the ocean and a large wave made him have to choose between his pants and his sunglasses. Sadly he chose his pants. This reminded me I need to find floating strap for him before we go to Florida next month.
What is reality but a concept unique to each of us? Can anything be classed as real when our perceptions differ greatly on so many things? Just because we see something a particular way does not make it so.

What wasn't around 30 years ago was LCD screens in your home, car and your pocket. I don't see the blue blockers saying their technology is "new" as much as the need (I know, I KNOW depending on which side of THAT coin you like) for it increasing. =)

Blue/violet blocking AR was a significant/relevant advancement in optical technology because it could be applied to any product that we can apply AR to (almost). So the significance of the product in the market place is that the benefits of filtering light are obtainable along with every other enhancement. The mumbo jumbo about blue/violet light is there to remind consumers why it was relevant to filter the light in the first place.Unfortunately, the poor education level of opticians, and the optical focus of optometrists, and the surgical focus of ophthalmologists have eliminated the common sense from optical professionals. So, manufacturers of products have to remind us why to care in the first place. What they would love, is if they could design a Prevencia type product and the optical community said with one voice "YES! That is so cool that we can apply these benefits through new technology in a new way that is more practical for daily use!" instead of the optical community responding with "So...blue/violet light is bad? But aren't they going to see a strange residual color?"
