    Prescription football visor

Our doctor finished an exam with a football player here at college. He has an rx of about -0.50 OU and the doctor told me to do some research and "make it happen" to get a prescription football visor for his helmet. I didn't think they could make these. I've contacted some sports departments at some universities and am waiting to hear back from them. Does anyone know of any lab that would be able to do such a thing. I would assume that the wrap and vertex distance would cause to many problems to even make one. Any suggestions?

More a problem with a visor's size. The largest blank a conventional lab can run is about 80mm. It would have to be molded to be a visor. I doubt seriously if anybody makes a molded Rx visor for a lot of reasons (mainly lack of demand.) Tell the doc to fit him with CL's.

If you mean one large lens for both eyes to look through, no, that is not any more practical than an Rx windshield for your car. Study physical and ophthalmic optics and binocular vision, do some ray tracing, and you'll appreciate some of the issues.

It's actually almost plausible for such a weak Rx but that begs the question, why bother with a -.50? That's almost not an Rx for a football player. He's better off with a standard face protected setup. If he must have clearer vision, fit him with contacts or wear a sports glass under the helmet.

Hmmm. . . .sounds suspiciously like when we used to send the newbie to the hardware store to pickup two Meibomian gland nuts. Either that or someone was asleep in geometric optics class.

A lot on athletes use disposable contact lenses just for the game. Any other solution sucks swamp water.

    Now, how about Rx windshields?

Cant be done plus the NCAA has strict rules in place in regards to visors

Why would one do this when they can use CLs instead? Its not like there is any inherent harm to the eye in wearing these contact lenses. I mean, if the player is hit hard enough to shatter the helmet, and expose the eye to actual harm, they likely have more to worry about than some soft CLs in their eyes...

CL or if dust and dirt is a problem... rec specs... or nothing... That low an RX? for football? Golf maybe, but for football they should see well enough.

Best part of this post......... "the doctor told me to do some research and "make it happen"............... not do some research and see if it can happen. I've been in your shoes and feel your pain.

Google "how can I get a prescription football visor?". Looks like your doctor isn't the first person to want one (not get one).
What is reality but a concept unique to each of us? Can anything be classed as real when our perceptions differ greatly on so many things? Just because we see something a particular way does not make it so.

Yeah.....no one can make a helmet visor with RX. I mean, Oakley makes visors that you can actually buy and install, but even they say no. lol There's just no way to do it. The closest you can get is a scuba mask but those are specially made. Contacts or rec specs is their option.

I'm thinking a $5,000,000.00 grant for seed money should last the 5+ years it will take to make a perfectly good non functioning prototype.

Hmm---What to call them? Izon is taken...

This is an interesting idea. However I would be cautious to install this inside of a football visor if its using suction cups to attach. One good violent hit and could pop off the visor inside the helmet.

They do make Rx inserts that fit inside the face shield on a Scott Respirator.
