Coworkers Mother in law seeing "flowers" upon waking up.

She's got open angle glaucoma, macular degeneration (dry), diabetic retinopathy, & dry eye syndrome. She says when she wakes up in the morning, she sees "colorful flowers" on her peripheral, that changes colors and go away as she blinks and adjusts. We are just guessing but figure it has something to do with all these problems she's already got. Maybe since she's laying down, the blood isn't getting to her eyes like it should? Coworker was talking with our office manager, and she told her to google it, but she's having trouble finding anything that describes this. I was just wondering if anyone on here had heard of anything like these symptoms before.

Seek the council of an ophthalmologist or horticulturist probably in that order.

Wouldn't this be a better world if we all saw colorful flowers when we woke up every morning!

Easy fix. Go to local home and garden store, buy some plants, and put them on your night stand. :)

I work in a medical specialty clinic and I've heard symptoms like this often, sometimes even with something as simple as an optical migraine. You should be able to call her medical eye doctor and ask their nurses/techs if she should be seen or not.
What is reality but a concept unique to each of us? Can anything be classed as real when our perceptions differ greatly on so many things? Just because we see something a particular way does not make it so.

It sounds like it may be Charles Bonnet Syndrome.

The original post didn't mention if she is blind or not. Not? That rules out Bonnet. Peripheral location rules out any macular problems, as those are central not peripheral. OP also did not mention mental status. If she's quite old, dementia may be at work. The alternate reality can be very detailed and descriptive, as in "I just had tea with the queen of England and she said to say Hi".

That said, the peripheral retina has very few cones so color vision is usually not a feature "out there". Migraines are known to cause colorful patterns, with or without headache or nausea found in classical cases. If she's over 90 I say let her enjoy the scenery.

    Rule out stuff.

Then brain circulation comes to mind.

Depends on the situation...may need to investigate fully.

Original post actually specifies Macular Degeneration, which does manifest Bonnet.

My patient with MD amblyopia and FC vision in OD with -15.00 script was just describing to me that in her right eye when she wakes up she sees a human face in her center vision in black and white.

Well the "Flower" one makes sense, that is likely just a random pattern generated by either the retina or the visual cortex based on bad data. A "flower" pattern is sort of like a burst of light, symmetric, multiple colors, etc... I can easily see something on the visual pathway creating something like that spontaneously from bad data or missing data that needs something filled in.

Seeing a flower-like pattern of light and color is very different from seeing photorealistic flowers.

Suggest a word association test. Throw a bunch out there then say "orange". If the response is "sunshine" - Well-- there you go!!!
