Help Lex 1000 santinelli edger problem

The little safety bevel/groover wheel stopped turning halfway through grooving a job. Is that an owner fixable deal or do I need a Santinelli tech in here?

Is it giving a voltage error? Will it run in wheel dressing mode? I've heard those are the motors that will seize up if one is going to seize up, I've been lucky with mine...

What is the error code it is showing?

he thinks it was 603 or 608 "swb wheel not turning" or something like that. He's gotten into it and has a Santinelli rep on the line walking him through some things. The little ribbed belt that I hoped it was looks brand new. All the gears turn by hand, so that doesn't sound "siezed up" to me. Now I'm hoping for a fuse or a switch. That motor looks expensive.

problem solved. The bearings in that little spindle that holds the grooving and the pin beveling wheels are worn out or corroded just to the point where the little motor cant push them around any more. Santinelli wants almost a grand for a "new" spindle, but wants another 500 if we don't return the "core", meaning we will get a rebuiilt spindle. And yeah, that Bill. S. the previous Santinelli guy is coming up to help with the fix and also show us how to install the Trivex roughing wheel I bought a couple of years ago but was too chicken to try to install it.

when installing the spindle use white lithium grease to space the gears, too tight of a fit will kill it, too loose will ruin the gears. They're spaced by adding washers to the spindle.

I'll pass that along to my optician/son. He will be very interested in that, and will probably jump at the idea. He even still changes his own brakes on cars because the parts are so cheap and in California brake jobs are $$$.

Still a problem. A little brass gear had broken inside the spindle. But new problem. The new spindle spins fine on machine test mode, but in operation, spindle refuses to turn when it swings down into place, machine gives "SBF wheel not turning" error. I do notice when it's spinning in test mode, the voltage varies quite a bit and the rpm seem to vary because the whine varies a bit in pitch. Any more ideas?

I think that when the SFB is replaced that there is a "secret" menu where you check the voltage but I had a tech on the phone walk me through it so I don't remember exactly how to get to that menu. Have you tried the live chat on santinelli's web site? Its very convienient (though being in CA you have to account for the 3 hour time difference).

If you need a backup tech, Bill thefinishinglab.com is in California and he's independent.

    No!

I am flying a Santinelli tech out on Monday to do what he can. So far I've heard anything from a motherboard needing replacement to a motor, to who knows what. Hopefully Santinelli can figure it out. This is not going to be cheap. We still can do all mounting types including drills, except no grooved jobs. I'm going to search my garage for my old what was it, Vigor?, manual groover from my glass days.

Case closed. Gus from Santinelli just finished up. It was the little motor that needed replacing, although we went ahead with a new (rebuilt) spindle as well. Everything is smooth and quiet now. Also got my Kubota tractor all fixed this week. $$$

I would check brushes in the motor...there are 2 rubber caps you can remove and check how bad brushes are. If they are too worn could cause issue ive replaced a set before..Bought a set of brushes on amazon 4mmx8mm 12mm long.

Seems like the LEX is too new of a model to have developed motor and spindle problems! My understanding is that these things occur after considerable use ie: many years and tens of thousands of cuts.

The whole spindle assembly had to be replaced. I think it was bad from the start because the sound it makes when pin beveling and grooving is way different then when it was even brand new. But of course it only totally failed just after the warranty had expired. Just like the tranny in my Dodge Pickup.
