kappa edger! help quick! please! part deux

My kappa ctd edger is having random issues. The lens clamp will not move at all. It just stopped working all of a sudden. I can hear the hydraulics trying to move the arm forward, and it moves about 1mm every time I hit my clamp left button, but it will not budge. The worst part is I have no error code. Edger thinks everything is fine, I did an 'self-diagnosis' and everything came out good. i can't see if anything is stuck. in 10 years, I've never had an edger problem without an actual error message so i'm completely lost. I really don't want to call my essilor tech, because he's an ***.

any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Problem:

    It will not clamp?
It will not move towards the wheels?

A more detailed description will definitely help. If you see no error code then more that likely you are getting power to the part and the associated controller board. If it's the clamp, then you may have a defective motor.

Or a frozen or contaminated slide "bearing".

I've seen this on WECO edgers...the outer seal fails and coolant/debris get swept into the brass bushing that acts as a slide bearing. It builds up over time, then the action doesn't work, leading to broken belts, burned motors, or failed air cylinders.

The only way to diagnose this would be to pull the outer cover, and take a look at the mechanism itself. More than likely it is a mechanical problem. If you can't track it down, take some pictures and post them here.

This is as descriptive as I can get: I place the lens in the edging chamber, I try to clamp the lens and the Chuck holder will not budge. That's about it.... and I don't know what to do. Again, I can hear the hydraulics trying to work, but it won't move. No error code or nothing....

    P's. Thanks for responding

I was edging an acrylic demo lens at the time.... think that had anything to do it? Kappas are pretty "idiot-proof"

Your problem happened to me several years ago. It was the clamping motor; it died! I ordered a new one, installed it, and it works fine, now.

On the plus side...it's an easy install. There are three allen screws holding the motor in place. I replaced it in 20-30 minutes. I don't remember the price for the replacement motor, though. Good luck with it.

yeah, you were right, the motor died. Thankfully I was able install one pretty quickly....now if my damn edger would drill thick lenses :(
