Normal (clear-indoors) photochromic lenses activate in UV light only. This is how they're able to remain so clear indoors, despite the fact that there is plenty of artificial and natural window light inside. Transitions Drivewear lenses do have UV-activating photochromics, but have additional, advanced photochromics that activate in visible light as well. This means they darken in the car (behind the windshield), then darken further once exposed to UV light outdoors.

MY Drivewear lenses 3 years ago were never clear. I will guess they went from 60% to 90% absorption, and they would do so instantly.
I thouroughly enjoyed them as a pair of photochromatic sunglasses, after accepting they were not acceptable in low light conditions.

Think of them as a Xtractive and a Polar Brownish-Yellow married.

Transitions Drivewear lenses are sunwear lenses, to be used during daylight hours only, outdoors and behind the wheel. They should never be worn at night or indoors. They have been engineered specifically to increase contrast in low light conditions, provided it's during the day and you're outdoors or driving.

The technology is called visible light photochromics and it works in the car because some of the photochromic chemicals on the lens darken when exposed to the visible light that comes through the windows. Most other photochromic lenses require UV light to activate, but because UV light is blocked by the windows, those other lenses don't darken in the car. Transitions Drivewear lenses have UV-activated photochromics as well as visible-light-activated photochromics.
