    About NAICS

    The North American Classification System

The industries on this site are classified according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Canada of 2007 and 2012. Statistics Canada maintains this industry classification which has superseded the 1980 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC).

NAICS was jointly adopted in 1997 by Canada, Mexico and the United States against the backdrop of NAFTA. The classification was designed to provide common definitions of the industrial structure of the three countries and a common statistical framework to facilitate the analysis of the three economies.

Considering the dynamics of today's economies, Canada, the United States and Mexico agreed upon revisiting the structure of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) every five years to make any necessary changes. As per the agreement, in 2012, a revision of NAICS was implemented.

NAICS was revised in 2012 to reflect changes to the Canadian and world economies. In particular, the Information and Cultural Industries sector was once again updated. The updates take into account the rapid changes within this area, including the merging of activities.

Its hierarchical structure is composed of sectors (two-digit code), subsectors (three-digit code), industry groups (four-digit code), and industries (five-digit code). These are broadly comparable for all three countries, although there are a number of important exceptions.

A country may choose to breakdown industries (five-digit code) into national industries (six-digit code) in order to capture additional detail. As the name indicates, national industries are unique to each country and cross-comparisons generally do not apply.

Stand proud Canadians: The world thinks highly of you.

Because in a survey that asked 48,000 consumers around the world to rate countries based on their overall reputation, Canada was the top-performing country for the fourth time in six years.

After Switzerland stole the title from Canada in the Reputation Institute’s annual list in 2014, Canada managed to snatch it back this year, notably for its “friendly and welcoming people,” “beautiful country,” and overall quality of life.

The only other country to take place first on the list along with Switzerland since the report was launched in 2010 is Sweden. Otherwise, Canada has topped the leaderboard four out of six years.

Rounding out the top five spots are Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Australia.

For the report, 48,000 consumers in the world’s richest G8 countries were asked to rate 55 countries based on three dimensions: effective government (safety, ethics, progressiveness); appealing environment (friendliness and lifestyle); and advanced economy, (high quality products and services, education, contributor to global culture).

Moreover, according to managing partner Fernando Prado, a good international reputation is highly bankable, notably among travelers.

“When people perceive a country positively based on their direct experiences and through the lens of others, that translates into increased tourism dollars,” he said in a statement.

“That’s because a country’s reputation dictates supportive behaviors such as the willingness of people to visit that country.”

A scan of the top 10 countries, meanwhile, also reveals an underlying trend: All are relatively small players when it comes to the international stage of politics, power and economy.

Evaluating a country is also an emotional perception, points out the report, in which participants make evaluations based on direct experience, communication, public perception and generally accepted stereotypes.

This year, respondents named Canada as the top country they wanted to visit, study in, live and work.

The report also highlighted the countries that hold the biggest gaps between their own self-image and external perceptions.

The countries that were perhaps seen to be least self-aware were Russia, China and India.

At the other end of the spectrum, Italians, South Africans and Brazilians are unduly hard on themselves, posting negative scores compared to public perception.

In Asia, Japan boasts the highest reputation, while the report credits US president Barack Obama for helping to improve the world’s perception of America: Though ratings have stabilized, the US has seen a 10-point (or 20 percent) improvement since 2008.

Here are the top 10 countries by reputation:

    1. Canada
    2. Norway
    3. Sweden
    4. Switzerland
    5. Australia
    6. Finland
    7. New Zealand
    8. Denmark
    9. Netherlands
    10. Belgium

Got that right. 12 months to compile and release data IMHO is plenty. Otherwise, why the hell are we paying these statisticians for???

Heck, that's a dream job for some people.
