    Glass lens edge feathering

    Hi,

Wondering if someone could help with this. Whenever we edge glass lenses and feather the edges on a hand wheel, the finish is not smooth. It almost seems like the lenses are about to chip. Is there a different type of hand wheel that should be used for glass? Any suggestions would be great.

Wet ceramic wheel is about the best, but it has to be WET.

Next is a high speed diamond flat wheel with a very fine grit.

The surface quality of the safety bevel (or "feather") is also going to depend on the specific type of glass you are working on. Photochromics work different from clear crown which work differently from fixed tint crown which work differently from 1.6/1.7/1.8 index glass.

You might also be using too much hand pressure. If you are getting sparkles and/or chipping, back off on the pressure and increase the amount of water flowing.

Thanks Mike. Do you know a source for ceramic wheel? None of the wheel companies I know carry it.

    I'm sure Mike will concur:

Between Grainger ( www.grainger.com ) and McMasters Carr ( www.mcmaster.com/ ) and Thomas Register ( www.thomasnet.com ) you can find parts and supplies to build or repair anything.

I have them on speed dial.

I like a 320 grit aluminum oxide wheel.
