    SpaceX booster landing attempt x2

Maybe too fast, and oscillating. What went wrong?

The world needs to invest in an elevator to space.

Why don't they just splash down and fish it out?

Still a long way to go for material strength. Cool idea though.

Primarily economics. The engines won't survive a water landing.

I bet they don't survive a crash landing either!

Nope, although it's hard to look away when it goes boom, pretty colors and all.

Still, we really need this, or something similar, to work. Look for the initials "CPC" on the side of the vehicle if we can't get payload into orbit at a competitive price.

Drove by the barge yesterday, they keep security a little tighter around that part of the port now. Would be really cool to see them come-in with it intact.

It looks like a balloon type structure, more of a shaft than an elevator. You really have to have an open mind to see this working.

I wonder if it will need guy wires for stability, extending outwards many miles. Don't build this around airports!

It's going to be difficult to land on with the strong jet stream winds at this altitude.

A big target for terrorists- remember the book/movie Contact?

    Base jumpers will be happy.

I suppose the idea is to launch and land a hybrid space plane on the platform, saving the vehicle 12 miles of vertical thrusting, which is roughly good for at most, a 10% energy savings. You'll still need substantial delta v to reach low earth orbit. I'm not sure how much of an advantage there is over an air launch vehicle like Pegasus, or a reusable SpaceX, if they can get their act together.
