Edger Repair - Santinelli Nidek LE-900sx Express - NYC

    Greetings Optiboard,

My lab tech informed me that our Santinelli Edger is need of service; it's not broken, but its chopping the lenses more than our lab tech wants. I've only been with the company for a year, but I was told it's been longer than that since the last service.

Anybody in NYC have a lead on edger repair or am I better off calling Santinelli and having them send a tech?

    Best,
    BP3

Does it need a new ruffing wheel? Or a new spindle? Are you using large or small blocks. When are the lens "chopping" up? Does this happen on all materials? Have you checked the chucking pressure? Also are the "feelers" on the LMU in good shape? I'm no expert on repairs on this machine but these would be a few of the questions I would be asking.

I asked my lab tech and this is what she relayed to me:

1.) Does it need a new ruffing wheel? Probably, it hasn't been replaced in a while
2.) Large block or small blocks? Usually small blocks
3.) Does this happen on all materials? Chops up primarily poly during edging, but sometimes trivex.
4.) Checked the chucking pressure? Chucking pressure was checked and ok
5.) Are the feelers on the LMU in good shape? the feelers are brand new

Replace the ruffing wheel. If you do a lot of trivex consider a trivex friendly ruffing wheel. Always use LARGE blocks whenever possible! As long as the feelers don't touch the block use the large block. Rule of thumb: if the large block fits in the frame, use it.

If you are not getting the trivex wheel with the holes (which I don't have either) make sure to clean your wheel with a brass bristle brush regularly between sets of trivex lenses, this will help it run well.

BTW, what is "chopping up" lenses? That sounds horrible. I've been walked through quite a few repairs on our 9000sx

Also 100% what mshimp, DO NOT BE LAZY. Use the large block.
