Cell phone photo of a prescription...honor it???

We recently started stamping all rx's with a "Save this prescription- Replacement copies $5.00" stamp. We're trying to cut down on patients who treat them as something they can throwaway then want us to jump through hoops to get another one. Sometimes only a few weeks later.

So now some of the patients are taking a cellphone photo of them to be sure they have it on file which begs the question would you fill it?

I think this is really an office policy issue (like "expired rx's") but I know I would. Is you're office prepared for it?

I think you have to. NYS law requires that Rxs transmitted by telephonic and/or other electronic means, are valid.

Pretty much the same as fax-ing a copy of it. I'd say yes.

I started reccomending that to all my customers a long time ago. If you need a "hard" copy, have them email to you, or print from a text.

I work in a OMD's office. I will fall over if one of these old timers showed me their Rx on their phone. After I recovered I would as them to send it to my office email address so that I can print it out. Not to comfortable with plugging just anyone's phone into our office computer network to retrieve a picture of a Rx that way my virus protection can do its job.

There are also applications that will let you print from your phone. They can store it on the phone, then print it before they come to the office. Or if the office has a wireless network, they can have their phone join it and print right there.

Hope there's not a massive phone hacking from the cloud of people's glasses prescriptions....
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

I always take a copy for myself, I have them email it to me, I will then save it to an rx folder.

Had an old guy yesterday with his RX on his phone; hooked up to our wireless printer and we have an RX.
I keep mine written in my phone under RX. You never know when I need more lenses.

Hooking up to your wireless network means hooking up to your patient database, Not ideal.

It is a wireless printer and who wants my patient data anyway. We have no ss#'s or credit card data so they can have have name, DOB, and their RX; that is worth nothing on the open market.

They can just text it to your phone and you can print it out on your wireless yourself.
