Hey all,
I'm looking for an edge thickness standard for grooved lenses. I remember back at LC it was 2.1 but I can't find anything. Is that just a thing they do or ANSI?

I don't know if its any help or not, but when we did string mounts on glass (waaaay back in the day), we always ran with a 2.5 mm minimum edge.
It's going to depend on your string thickness and the width of the groove. Then add in at least 0.3 mm on each side of the groove to prevent flaking or channel edge breakdown (especially during insertion!).
I've always heard 2.2
Depends on the material of the lens, and how skilled whomever is doing the mounting is.
Industry "standard" is about 1.8 on Poly/Trivex and 2.0 on everything else. Thinner can be done on any material up to a point, with Poly or Trivex being the better bet to be the thinnest. I've done a groove down the dead center of a poly 1.0 edge lens... once in 19 years.
Generally speaking, we don't go below 1.5 on Poly/Trivex and 1.8 on everything else, and that's usually only by special request.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
My "automatic groover" the one that comes with the santinellie 9000sx grooved Trivex down to a .8 one time. The lens held for 2 years no problem.
I usually choose 2.2 for poly because I like to push the groove forward on the lens, if its a 1.7 or 1.8 you really need to do a 50-50 groove. For CR its 2.5-3.0 I don't like risking shards of lens going in someones eye just to see how skilled I can get placing a bevel. They need to function as safe glasses also.
Thanks! This does help out.
This is a big help, I have a Dr I cut for that will grove Cr-39 stock and I've been trying my best to get that to end.
I've always kept poly and trivex at the 1.5-2.2mm marks 1.60 and 1.67 never less than 2mm and this is the first time I've ever really grooved Cr-39.
Tallboy: I'm impressed I know Trivex dies not split usually, but I thought the edges would roll. Nice job. :^)
