Calculating Results of a Roll & Polish

This profession doesn't let my trig skills get too rusty, and this year for Thanksgiving I'll include Optiboard on my gratitude list for being a treasure trove of technical wisdom.

After a half-decent escavation, I didn't uncover this one anywhere yet, tho:

Are there constants or equations to how rolled edges are executed with which I can calculate the results of a roll and polish before the fact?

e.g. Do I assume a 45-degree angle from the edge plane? Is there a standard distance behind the bevel I should assume is constistantly left alone regardless of script?

Thanks for all the pearls of wisdom: past present & future!

Is this a serious question ? There's basically 2 types of rolls, the "rolled" curved, rounded roll and the slant, shelf roll as far as I know. I've always left it up to the discretion of the patient as to which type he/she would like.

I too believe this is all art of the benchman at the hand wheel and not a science- although I'm sure you could formulate an equation.

    Just don't ask me how.

Ill agree with Uncle Fester. If you have 7mm of ET to play with you can take a little or you can take a lot. Its more art then science. There are lots of variables. Can you assign aesthetics a value? Customer input and satisfaction? You might need two values for that. Im sure it would be a beautiful equation.

There aint no formula for this task anymore than there was a formula for the Mona Lisa. A little skill, talent and practice will do the trick.

Thinking about this--- now I'm curious...Do new edgers do this???

My optician/benchman bones are rapidly petrifying.
