    Bevel on a lens

Is putting a bevel on a lens after it comes off the edger in the ANSI standards? I have been receiving jobs without a safety bevel and have looked at the ANSI standards and can't find an answer. Does anyone know where to look and get an answer.

    Thanks

Its customary to touch off a lens but I can't say I've ever seen it in an ANSI. The standards are just recommendations either way. Touching off lenses prevents injury and is good practice good luck.

    It is not in Z80.1-2010.

However, section 5.2 in Z87.1-2010 states "Protectors shall be free from projections, sharp edges, or other defects which are likely to cause discomfort or injury during use."

Remember, A.N.S.I. standards are only guidelines and suggestions, not the law. (The American National Standards Institute isn't even a government agency, they're a private non-profit organization.)
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

I do it on BOTH sides regardless of RX or BC (VERY lightly on the front to knock-off that little lip). It's good practice safety wise and will greatly reduce the chance of the lense chipping on its circumference.

I have the edger do one on every job and if i don't think its enough, ill do it by hand. you don't want someone coming into your shop with a laceration, when you can take a few seconds to add a safety bevel. just my .02

I'd have a word with your lab manager or the manager of the outside lab that you use. They may have a new employee, or a new machine that hasn't been set up correctly.
