    Confused Weight loss and Astigmatism?..

Well, a client today claimed that over a dioptre decrease in his astigmatic correction was related to recent weight loss.

Anyone else heard of this or know of any studies that have taken place relating to weight loss and astigmatism increase/decreases?

No but I knew a chiropractor that said hecould put a staple in your ear to help with weight loss. I think maybe you are on to something like that.

Have not heard of specifically astigmatism changes due to weight loss. Loss of weight does lead to a lowering of blood sugar levels which can affect the prescription.

This is what was going through my head also, weight loss=adjustment in blood sugar=fluctuation in Rx. Never associated weight loss with astigmatic reduction

I have seen massive changes from blood sugar levels lowering, like a diopter of minus or more. Whenever you lose weight your glucose levels will probably drop. I have a few Type II diabetic patients who fluxuate up and down 50lbs relatively often... it can lead to a lot of remakes, they usually pay for these of course.

Not proven. Yet, but I am hoping for something similar in 12mths time after bariatric surgery early 2015. I'm basically Plano/-4.00 ou, with a shift due to T2 that has varied +|-0.50d at times. It's driving me CRAZY! (Esp when you ad burgeoning presbyopia in to it)

im hoping for a generous swing down and some stability. Hoping, not assuming it.

When I was still in high school working for the OD, I had a very energetic pt who claims that sticking to the adkins diet had improved his distance rx enough that he didn't need his glasses. I don't remember if he was a minus or plus though.

But now, you don't have to ask for permission, if you want to go out fishing.

I'm not saying it's always true but atleast of my patient base, it seems as though very large/heavy patients, and many Hispanic patients suffer from large cyls. Why is this? Of course I've seen many others with high cyls, but it's more so common with the above.

I knew an *optometrist* who believed astigmatism was caused by a misalignment of chakras and would not prescribe cyl because he would rather treat the chakra problem than the astigmatism symptom. He had boatloads of patients who swore by his advice. Man once you get them to sip your Kool-Aid you've got them for life.

How did he go about fixing the chakra problem?

Long ago when I was still involved in the work function we had quite a few labile diabetics in our clinic. As I recall, among this group we seldom saw a variation greater than 0.50D in the spherical component and seldom any change whatsoever in the astigmatism.
