    1.60 polar transmission

I have a high plus patient wearing CR39 polar gray lens, which she says is just a hair too dark. I am fitting with 1.60 polar autograph III. anybody know if the polar G15 version transmits more or less light than the gray version?

Personally, I would use brown, but patient is not a big fan.

    Thanks!

Knowing the brands of polarization in both cases would really help answer your question. But as a rule, G-15 will increase light transmission and enhance contrast in so doing. If light transmission is a serious concern, I'd be sure to get an AR coating on that 1.60 material to offset the low abbe. Time to switch to Trivex instead? Comperably priced to 1.60. (Not sure if Autograph 3 is available in polarized trivex, tho.)

1.60 Polar is SO expensive, though a great product.

Not knowing her RX, I'd say choose polarized gray A CR39 which will lighted it up a bit. I'm not aware of Gray A being available in trivex though, that would be ideal.

Or put AR on both sides of the lens.

Rx is +8 with +3.25 add...Out of range for trivex...

AR on both sides of the lens...that is an interesting suggestion. I always always do backside AR only on sunglasses, however if what is desired is more light transmission that is a good idea.

Increased light transmission is why we generally don't put AR on the front of sun lenses, are there other drawbacks? As I said, this is something I would generally consider a big no-no.

No other drawbacks that I know of beyond those normally associated with AR. Carat advantage on a gray lens looks like a Blue flash mirror, its kind of cool looking, and not too costly.

A +8.00 is out of range for Trivex? Really?
