Do you sell your display frames or special order?

I'm just curious to see how other optical typically operate. Our entire business model is that we're able to make glasses in an hour so we usually sell the display frame. I can't help but feel that we're losing some sales by selling the popular frames and taking them off the shelves within the first few days of their arrival. Just interested in hearing how other business handle these situations.

We sell from the displays whenever possible then re-order the frame back in. We wait until we have several to order from the same manufacturer to save on the outrageous shipping charges. Sometimes it's as much as $9 for a single frame.

we sell display frames. If a customer wants a new fresh frame we just order a new one. I do track my frame sales over the year and if I find I sell a lot of that one type of frame I will order it to replace it, or have a few on under stock. Some lines I do wait until I have a big order so I can with to get a discount or free frames. not all companies do that.

Do you have many patients leave because they cannot find anything?

I look at it this way. If the frame has a price tag on it , it's new sell it .

We do a lot of different things. Different frames and different companies require different approaches. We have a deal with Prodesign Denmark where we keep frames on the board as display frames and they charge us no shipping when we order frames for patients. I have several best-selling or unique frames that I want to always have on the board; those I have marked with a red star on the price tag to remind my opticians to special order them so we don't lose them. But most frames, over 90% of my board, we sell directly.
I'm Andrew Hamm and I approve this message.

Like Andrew, we do a little of both. Some frames go right from the board, others we order in depending on several variables.

I'm moving to all sell out/off with a small number of exceptions.
