Why do eyeglasses look bigger in photos?

I notice that when I take pictures of myself or other people in eyeglass frames, even with no or demo lenses in them- the frames look huge in the pictures! They don't seem that big in real life.

Two questions- has anyone else noticed this? What do you do to minimize it?

Does anyone know why this is?

This effect due to the glasses being closer to the camera and due to the angle of the glasses versus the camera. All features closer to the camera appear larger. Close-ups exacerbate the problem.

Take a high resolution photo with the person further away and then zoom in on the eyeglass frames. This will go a long way to solving the problem.

Thank you! I figured it might have something to do with the angle. I guess this explains why my nose looks bigger, too!

I find that when one puts on a really nice frame their head tends to get a little bigger.

I just saw a news story about this...Most cell phone cameras have a "fish eye" lens which makes us look a bit different than normal...The point of the story is that people think they look funny in their "selfies" and are rushing to go get plastic surgery when it's just the camera phone!

So I had my daughter take a few pictures of me with glasses from a little further a way with my cell. Then I cropped them so just my head showed. My face and glasses look much more in proportion! It's odd, my face looks wider(which is good) and the glasses look smaller.

It's focal length. Most pics you're seeing are likely with way too wide of a focal length. Shoot with 70-120mm true focal length and it will look much better. Wedding photogs typically use 70-200 lenses and zoom in from a distance.
