    Retina Selfie

Hey everyone. I'm a licensed dispensing optician and a second year optometry student at Southern College of Optometry.

For those of you that wonder what your OD's are looking at when they dilate the patient's eyes, here's a neat trick that I discovered after practicing dilated fundoscopy in the teaching labs at SCO. I used my 20D condensing lens and smart phone while in the mirror to capture a retina selfie. Here's the YouTube link:

    http://youtu.be/1fzRb3uLGPg

It's pretty amazing, because this view is nearly identical to the what you see using the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, except that it's a monocular view. Not something everyone can do, since you have to be dilated and have some experience setting up the working distance correctly, but a cool trick nonetheless. I've had some OD's say that they've used the video for patient education. So, feel free to share and comment below.

Thanks guys. From what I've read online, the use cell phone video/images is starting to be used in telemedicine applications. Images can be captured inexpensively and transmitted to remote locations for review/analysis. It's pretty cheap technology that most everyone has access to (waaaay cheaper than a retinal camera!) It will be interesting to see where this goes down the road.

I've created another YouTube video explaining how to capture the retina selfie, if you have access to dilating drops and want to try it yourself:

Though I must warn you, if you're light sensitive, it sure hurts! Those LED lights are super bright!

The awesome part is an OD with an ABOM, If you ever want to work in Florida we'll make room.

Florida is closed for new ODs. You have to murder someone and assume their identity.
